I'm not sure I agree George. It's your car, who's to say that it's "wrong". It's personal taste.

E-Types and 911s aren't especially rare. A Gullwing - now that would be harder for me to see.
Perhaps that's where I draw the line.

Well that and the 8 coupe. I just can't bring myself to mod it...

Hi..
wow great post...
Absolutely beautiful work so far...
You're inspiring me to really get on with the research for my own V8 swap!
thanks...

74ls1tr6

Where in California are you located Mike?

Maybe I can inspire you more, and bring my TR6 by to see up close and in person!!

Anonymous User

Oh! extremely excellent,Looking Good! Congrats my friend!

74ls1tr6

OK,

Sent in my "How it was done article" to Curtis today!

74ls1tr6

Update!

I'm getting my TR6 on a dyno tune + getting idle tune and drivability fine tune. So I will post up some results soon.

I have all the parts for a front brake up-grade also. A dual 7" booster, 12.19 vented rotors with 4 pot Wilwoods, Custom hats, Custom secondary caliper brackets, residual valve in front and back. This will be my winter project along with a list of small stuff.

74ls1tr6

Dyno run results!

408.4 Rear Wheel Horse Power @ 5800 to 6135 rpm. My injectors were at 100% duty cycle around 6100 rpm. Need to probably go to some Ford Motor Sport red top 30 lbs injectors(Ford Chevy mix :-)). I'm still running stock 28 lbs injectors. Nice power, and all at 26 mph on highway.

Rear Wheel Torque @ 393.3 .... at 4677 rpm.

Rev limiter set at 6800 rpm

First run after reving to 6764 rpm, then letting off, it was running a little fat, let out a Huge 2 1/2 foot flame out the exhaust. I was standing in the back off to the side doing a video, kind of scared me a little + black smoke. So my video did get some of the flame but I was not focusted on the camera anymore. This shop Dyno, can dyno dragsters up to 2500rwhp.

I will scan the number sheet also later and maybe some Video posting.

These dyno runs were in 3rd gear! After checking there were in 4th gear.

That is pretty awesome Calvin.  I am amazed that you get 26 mpg with an engine that has this output.  It goes to show you that the high performance engines of today are superior to the engines of the 60's and 70's.
Calvin I think it would be wise to regularily get under that car and check the frame for cracks and distortion given that you have so much power at the rear wheels.  The Bowtie car now has a new frame because his frame could not handle the power and it was no where near the 400 rearwheel hp.
When will we get to see some more pictures of this work of art?

Cheers
Byron

I have looked several times, and keep looking all the time. I'm ready to buy a lift so many times knowing what Joe has gone through(Bowtie6). It is nice to have a California frame to start off with. I didn't have any rust that I could find when sand blasting. I may even add some more bracing in other areas for my peace of mind.

Oh! For photos Curtis is working on my "How it was done article" I sent him a DVD full of photos. So It will be posted up on Curtis's time, and there is no rush on my part.

74ls1tr6

Nice! I got my Wilwood front brake setup done yesterday. 12" + rotor on custom machined aluminum Hats and secondary brackets made out of steel. Thanks to Ken H for his blue print skecthings and my trusty machinist. The machining looked so good I didn't paint them and used Sharks Hide on both Hats and Brackets.

More on this soon next week.

I will post some photos next week after I get back from Lackland AFB to see my son grad from BMT.

rficalora

Too bad we couldn't have hooked up Calvin.  You're in Tx & I'm in CA this week!

74ls1tr6

Wow, that is pretty funny. Are you Palo Alto for business

Med72

Calvin:

Great lookin car!  Very professional restore.  I have a question.  I like what you did with the fuel tank.  Where did you get the new fuel tank?  With my previous TR6, I always hated the constant fuel smell.  This is exactlly what I want to do with this new TR6

Thanks

Med72

rficalora

Yes, was there on business.  My boss is from there so i"m out that way at least a few times every year.

74ls1tr6

Hi Art,

I used an RCI aluminum 19 gallon tank. I just reworked it for the fuel injection return, baffels, and sump on the bottom.

Bought the tank online like all the other 85% of parts to rebuild this car.

Rob,

San Antonio was freeking cold. I don't know how my twins did bmt in it. I have a new found respect for the military being an AF brat. Palo Alto probably was a little warmer than Cypress?

rficalora

Yeah, Palo Alto's weather was way nicer that week.  But, we're back to low to mid 70's during the days so it's been nice except we've had rain every day or two for a couple of weeks.  Can't complain though, the lake we frequent has been down almost 10' (and while it's 21,000 surface acres, it's only 50' deep in the deepest part) & most launch points have dry land well beyond the end of the ramps.  With the recent rain it's headed back up.  We're only 6.5' low now.  Another 3 feet & I can get my boat out of the garage & back on the lift.

74ls1tr6

Rob,

I'm sure your lake in the area has filled up some more. My son Trevor is at Sheppard AFB (TX) for tech school, and said they had lighting bolts with lots of rain just lately.... which is some 4 hours away from you I believe....

Update!

Talked with Richard Good about the rear springs in the back to find out what lbs rating they were. He said they were 450lbs springs. I asked if he had any higher rated springs.....So I orderd some 600lbs springs for the rear of the TR6. I installed them in the rear last weekend. Also installed some Spax adjustable shocks up front after taking a 3/4" spacers out from under the springs (had KYB gas shocks in there). Set the Spax shocks up  to a fairly firm setting. Since taking out the spacers up front....the car rides 1" lower up front now. The 600lbs springs in the rear droped the back down about 1/2'.

Now during acceleration...the car doesn't squat down like it use to. The car has a raked look to it now + the front has more negative camber to now....may need to go get an alignment again $83.00 at Les Swab tires.

I have a few more things on the to do list before heading out to British V8 meet in Palestine in May. If everything works out... SCCA solo ll is having thier first event of the year...on the 21st of this month at Mather AFB (which has been shut down for years). Would love to be involved this year...just need to figure out what class I would be in. Also need a good roll bar...may need to fab one up of have a special one made up.

rficalora

Calvin, great timing on your post... Lake is definitely up... Not quite full pool, but a good 8' higher than it was.  2' below full and just need another few inches to get the boat back on the lift.  Was up there this weekend doing some work on the place (redoing out kitchen so had to strip off the '70's wallpaper).  Took the boat out for about a 45 minute run.  Had been about a year since we'd been on the water - felt great!  And pleasantly surprised the boat ran great after sitting so long.

Looking forward to seeing you @ Palestine.  Don't break anything in the SCCA solo II event!

I don't generally visit the Triumph part of the forum but this was linked to the MG side so I took a look. You did a really nice job with all the fabrication and finishing it off as well. Have you weighed the car and do you know the front/rear weight distribution? How much of an issue is it getting the tires to hook up with all that torque? I'd love to see the car if you ever drive it to San Diego, I will be at the 2014 get together in Colorado Springs for sure.

Once again, great job!

Jim

74ls1tr6

Hi Jim,

Thanks for the compliments!

The tires hook pretty good when I have a full fuel tank(19 gallons of fuel over the rear tire area). I haven't been able to get a front to rear weight ratio yet or weight of the car yet. I'm hoping one of these car venues will have the scales to have this done. I'm sure in the near future I will get these numbers and share. The next venue I will attend will be Triumphest 2012 in Flagstaff AZ. http://www.triumphest.com/  Next bug to fix is better braking before I go !!

May show up for 2013 BV8!

In 2014 I hope to be at BV8 get together, would love to see your widened MGB in the flesh.

We might need to start a BV8 in the West?

Calvin

rficalora

Calvin - look for a truckstop with scales.  You can get front/back that way for about $10-12.

74ls1tr6

Thanks Rob. I'll have to check that out! I was thinking of a garbage recycle center also, where they weight the big trucks before and after they dump.

Jim Stabe

Calvin

I'd love to see a BV8 get together here in California, all we have to do is convince all those people on the wrong coast to come out here. For weighing your car you might try a moving/storage company. The one close to me has a set of scales in the ground for weighing their trucks, don't know if they all do though.

I can't believe with 400 ft lbs at the wheel you don't turn your tires into black striping paint every time you hit the gas.

JShipman

Love the Rota SB Hyper black polished rims. Where did you find these? Been searching on the internet with no luck.

74ls1tr6

Hi Jonathan,

This is just one website I found what I used. Check out what will work for you in size and width + offset? Also check out the bolt pattern for you application?

Here is the website:
http://www.wheeldude.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=6809

This is the Rota Web site, with all the rim sizes, offset, and width.

Good luck!
