Dear All, I have read some very conflicting arguments about whether you can or can't tow an SD1 Rover (V8 3.5L) with a manual LT77 gearbox. Apparently the gearbox does not get sufficient oil if you tow it for any of time. I would be very greatful for a reply from someone who definatelly knows the answer to this question at I want to tow my kit car using a tow farme to take it to events etc.

I seem to remember in the dim distant past reading somewhere that this is the case with the LT77 as I assume that when in neutral the oil pump may not be being driven.

If this is the case, but do check with a rover gearbox specialist, you may have to disconnect the prop shaft at the axle or stump up for a proper trailor.

If your in the UK as I assume, give Ashcroft transmission a call they will know for certain.

From the Haynes manual:

"Manual gearbox models must not be towed with the rear wheels on the ground unless the propeller shaft has been disconnected at the rear axle...."

The transmission's oil pump runs off the layshaft and indeed does not operate when in neutral.  From the following website, follow the Gearboxes link at the top for some good info.

You do not tow with a Rover 5-Speed hooked up to the rear axle. I did it once when I was just getting into this habbit/addiction and the gear box lasted about 5K miles........then it fell a part! Disconnect the drive shaft and you will be good.

An oil pump in a manual tranny never sounded like a good idea to me.

I agree that the LT77 should not be towed via rear wheels - even short distances.  From what I've learned, the rear wheels will drive gears but not the pump.  It's only driven by the engine side when in gear.  Either disconnect the driveshaft or put it on a flatbed (my preference).

With a tow truck: hooking on the rear leaves the front end too close to the ground and will likely damage the air dam and bumper.  Make sure you are emphatic about this with any tow driver as some may try to convince you otherwise.  Just say NO, Kevin, Just say NO!  

LT77 trans is not a cheap one to fix and the slight added cost of a flatbed is waaaay more cost effective and easier on the whole car.

The other bit of advice I can offer you is....  Shop for a tow company before you need it and keep their ph# handy.  You'll know better what you're getting and you likely won't get over-charged.

If you have an Auto club membership, explain to them on the phone this unique requirement before they send out a truck.

Another reason is from my ill fated experience was I had a parts car I was towing jump into gear at 55mph. The tires locked up and then broke free after 75 feet. I used this gear box in a TR8 and 3rd was destroyed. Before that tow accident it was smooth as silk.
