Question is how did the strainer get so torn up?

Alcohol in the gas? Plastic doesn't like it very much.

We do have ethanol in the gas here.  I don't recall if it's E10 or E15.  I'd be surprised though if that caused the problem.  I've only got 4yrs & 14k miles on my car -- way too many production cars running the same fuel pump/strainer (Walbro 255) getting way more years & miles.  I'm thinking it was either defective from the start, maybe damaged during installation, or possibly some debris in the tank got it.  I am now carying a spare pump & strainer; if it happens again, I'll flush the tank out to see if there's any debris that could be tearing it.

I'll bet that's a Chinese walbro.
There are lots of them floating around.
The Chinese plastics are garbage and go brittle and break up just like yours did.
Make sure that yours has made in USA on every part. Including the strainer.

Interesting Fred.  I just dug the strainer out of the trash; no markings on it at all.
