Ultrasonic thickness guage

Hong Kong, digital for copper, steel, aluminum/etc. Range of 1.5mm-225mm. Anyone use one of these ? I have (2) professionally tested iron blocks, to compare with.  Onward, roverman.

Be interesting to see how much meat is in a Buick 215 cylinder vs a Rover.

FPE, 215 is thinner,(3.5"/3.5" bore), being semi permanent mold, but higher tensile. 215's never moved a sleeve, as they are ribbed and integral cast. How these things hold together at 700+ psi, is anybodies-guess.  Nanoseconds ?  roverman.

Might have a bit of a time with it considering the two dissimilar metals and the probability of an air gap and or corrosion.

I would still like to see a Buick vs rover comparison. I don't put much stock in the Rover blocks.

I use them almost daily but what you need is one that has a "A Scan" because it will show the liner to block boundary if there is no air gap. If you have an air gap you will only see the thickness of the liner repeating its self. I do Babbitt bearings all the time for bond to the steel shell. Its easy but you have to have the right set up. The transducer is the most important part. Its a size and frequency combination.

This is a good bond where the sound hits the bonding area and passes thru into the steel giving a single signal of the two material interface


This is a bad bond where the sound hit the bond break and then repeats in the Babbitt material never going into the steel shell.

That's what I was getting at Mike.
The cheaper units won't have the resolution required to read accurately.
And the skill of the operator is a big factor.
I've used them for years and it's not the "point and shoot" deal that most people believe.
In the hands of someone like yourself, who knows how to use the tool. They are irreplaceable. But for a beginner there is a steep learning curve.

Fred, do you mean it is not like a "Peter Meter"?   just lay it on and read the scale.   Tiny, Small, Barely, Almost, average, too much .   Note:The size lettering decreases from TINY to t.much.  Can't really ready w/o glasses.  Guess maybe wishful thinking >  :-)
