Direct Fire Ignition & the Ford 5.0 L

Though I've viewed DFI in a number of other 5.0L swaps I haven't seen one yet on a B swap.

Two primary reasons for entertaining this approach. 1. I don't have to deal with a dizzy the really is in the wrong place.  2. it makes hood clearance less an issue due to routing of the intake.

Has anyone seen any other performance type gains from there use?

Accurate timing is essential and it does improve performance. I have been toying with the idea of selling the plug with a drive for the oil pump for the Ford 302.

You are very correct in that there needs to be a distributor driver to operate the oil pump.  I have the Electomotive DFI system and would be happy to work with you on it.  I had planned to cut a stock Ford distributor (with a steel gear) and locate it in such a way that it would drive the oil pump shaft.

I'm sure exactly if that would work but that was the direction I was going to pursue.  PM me to discuss.

Very similar!!  that's the part of DFI I wish there were a better answer for!

The long and the short of it is pretty much what you've displayed!  I'd be happy to do some testing if you're interested in marketing the idea/

Not really Doug, that is just the drive for my 340. Too many other things on my plate. Feel free to use it. The sensor is a late Ford part.

Doug, just go to a salvage yard and get the plug you need from a late model (1996-2001) Ford Explorer 5.0 Liter (302).  The Explorer improved to the DIS system starting in 1996 and the distributor was replaced with a camshaft sensor via a modified distributor base; it's very short.  Just what you need.

I am working on something similar for my Rover V8 engine. It uses the EDIS ignition system from Ford and a crankshaft toothed wheel with sensor. The dizzy is replaced with a cut off dizzy and an aluminum plug on the top.
Parts are available in the UK.

Yeah, that's what mine is and I found the Ford Cam sensor/cap to top it off. The upgrade to MS-III will require the cam sensor.

Jim, what application is yours? It looks like a GM fit as it doesn't have the extension for the oil pump drive shaft a Ford requires like in the photo I've posted a link  on.http://static.summitracing.com/global/images/prod/large/rnb-689-103_w.jpg

(340 actually, could be BBB with a different gear.)
If you notice, it has two blades, one steel and one brass for balanced loading on the thrust washer below and balanced weight.

Doug, I'm curious what intake you're planning on using?

I use the XDI on my 400. I cut down a distributor and made a cap to drive the oil pump. My brother uses them on his GMC V12's and other engines including a Continental 1790ci tnk engine. We just laser cut a toothed wheel for the front. Easyt o set up.
