No one has volunteered yet to help write an article about our field trip to Hatfield Restorations during BritishV8 2012.

The article will feature about 46 photos. I know how to caption maybe ten of them.

So how about a little contest?

I'll post pictures, one by one, and you guys can either suggest full captions or at least caption ideas.

Here's a good one to start with.... How would you caption this photo?

" When is it done " ?

She said "Very underdressed for the show"

"When I'm finished you won't be able to tell me apart from a deLorean!"

"Is that a Hemi under the hood?"  Nice '34 Ford with hood bubbles on the new hood sides to clear either an early Hemi or an Ardun converted flathead.

ding ding ding ding ding ding ding... We have two winners!

I'm going to run with caption ideas suggested by Bill Young and Rick Ingram respectively.

In context, the caption will look something like this:

Quote"Is that a Hemi under the hood, or are you happy to see me?" The bonnet of this '34 Ford five window
coupe has evidently been modified to clear an early Chrysler Hemi or an Ardun converted flathead.
"When I'm finished, you won't be able to tell me from a deLorean!" Well, no. This car will be painted one
day soon, but Gary Hatfield isn't worried about surface rust while it's stored here in his air-conditioned
display building. Very minor surface corrosion, mostly from hand prints, will easily come off first.

I confess that I didn't know a '34 Ford from any other year from '33 through '37... but I guess I'm learning.  


Next up... what caption ideas can you guys suggest for this cheeky little '40 Willys Coupe?

"I like a car that gives me the Willys"

Isnt that a Vicky?  Rear quarter windows seem a bit long for a coupe but not long enough for a sedan.

I remember Gary said it's his personal car. I don't remember what it is, or what he's done to hot-rod it.

Curtis, I believe a 39/41 Buick/Olds/pont/chev, the tailights look Buick tho.

That's a helpful lead! Based on it, I searched around, and it seems Buick used these taillamps for 39 and 40, but a more elaborate design for 41. I think these earlier ones were just brake lights, and that the original turn signals were incorporated into a separate trunk medallion (which Gary has apparently shaved.)  Turn signals were a brand new feature for Buick in 1939.

Did anyone note whether this is a Series 40 ("Special") or a Series 60 ("Century")?  According to one source I just found, the two models were mostly similar except engine size (248cid vs 320cid straight eights.) Is there an external difference? Did Gary say? The internet is chock-full of wrong information and I hate to add to the mess with a bad caption.

My first guess would be 1955 Chevy painted coral...

Speaking of '55 Chevies... a couple months ago my wife and I watched a really neat old movie called "Two-Lane Blacktop" about two guys and their '55 Chevy racecar.  Very highly recommended.  The movie featured James Taylor as "the driver" and Dennis Wilson (of the Beach Boys) as "the mechanic" - although in my opinion it's Laurie Bird as "the girl" who had the best role and who gave the most memorable performance.

Hey Curtis. For the Willys, how about this?  Gee Willikers, I feel like an old guy, no teeth no glasses and no bonnet! Tim

Time Warp T.  Very retro to the late 60s style made famous by Kookie Burns T on 77 Sunset Strip. Windshield stays, pin stripped frame and body, cowl lamps , etc along with the American Racing 5 torque thrust wheels and no front brakes are perfect for the period. Looks a lot like Tommy Ivo's T bucket, but he used a Buick nail head instead of a Chevy.
As for the Willys, that's one rare car. Most of these that are remaining were modified to race cars many years ago, very few left original as this one is with the little flat head four engine. 1940 model it looks like, although the 41s were almost identical, only minor differences in the grills. After the war Willys only produced Jeeps until they brought out the Aero which is a completely new design.

It's a Packard Clipper, but is it a '46 or a '47? (Side hinged hood!) What else can you think to say about it?

Like being there all over again. What a place!

Wow!  That was the day I had to leave early and it looks like I missed a great stop.  There's a very well known hot rod shop near me (Bruce's Rod Shop in Spring, TX).  They do awesome work and it's fun to walk around and watch, but they don't have near the variety of cars Hatfield does and it's nice to see restorations along with the hot rods.

Nicely done, that was a fun day!
