I am trying to find either a set of spider gears or a complete open differential to fix a Toro fairway mower (Groundsmaster 3000) and considering that many British cars use a smaller axle thought maybe something might match up. The ring gear is 7"and uses 10-3/8" bolts. The side gears are 27 spline and measure 1.175" so they probably fit about a 1-1/8" shaft. Overall width of the carrier is around 5", a bit more with the bearings. The diameter of the cavity for the spider gears is 3.200".

Can anyone think of anything close? I don't mind doing a little machining to get a fit.

$411.00 does seem steep for bevel gears in my book as well, how does that diff compare to say a Dana 20 from a golf cart application?

John, it sounds like maybe I've overlooked the obvious. Where did you find the bevel gears?
I haven't looked at Dana 20 yet. Dana 30 is actually pretty close but uses a 1-1/16"axle which I'm pretty sure will be too small. And it looks wider.
