Straight Rear Axles?

Hi all,

I am new to this forum and just discovered it a few days ago.  Pretty impressive!
Anyway, I am wondering what rear axles are being used for an MGBGT?  If I decide to move on a car project I think a Ford 5.0 would be a great motor for that car.  I want something that can handle 300hp of spirited road driving or track use.  No drag racing.

What I discovered so far is that an 8" (year, make?) rear end is sturdy.  What vehicles did this rear end come in?  I am more familiar with the Ford 8.8" unit as used in Fox era Mustangs.

I also would prefer to mod the car so 5 lug wheels could be used along with larger disc brakes on all 4 corners.  Any thoughts on that?

And finally, if I went Spitfire instead would it be wise to just replace the IRS with a straight axle?

The Dana 44 or 10 bolt GM rearend will also get it done.

Need to distinguish between early and late GM 10 bolt.
Also some divisions used a different axle.

(I can't see using one though, unless your project car weighs 3 or 4 thousand pounds.)

I guess I should have clarified 10 bolt.

Back in the day, 10 bolt meant either the 8.2" or 8.5" GM 10 bolt rearend.  Nowadays, it is the 7.5" or 7.625" 10 bolt.  Either will do fine for most conversions.

Mike Moor has been testing his 7.625" 10 bolt Camaro rear for many years now behind his 300 RWHP MGB.

It is very difficult to find anything lighter than a stock MGB Salisbury rearend that is strong enough.  The 8" Ford?  The aluminum center is NLA & the pinion location make it slightly less efficient.
