How many V 8 engines were designed and made in the UK and not bought under license from a foreign engine builder..

Great question, on at least two levels! It would be interesting to know production volumes as well as engine models/series.

I'll list a few series that come to mind, as a starting point:
Rolls Royce's L-series
Rolls Royce's N-series
Aston Martin's (1969-on)
Daimler's little hemi
Triumph's Stag

Plus many racing engines, including notably Cosworth's DFV, Coventry Climax's Godiva, BRM, etc.,
