Fuel Injection question

Hey guys,

Greg on this site has a Federal system FI for sale. I'm seriously interested in this but it doesn't have an ecu with it. This is a somewhat analog system and fits nicely under the hood of a stock body. Does anyone have a recommendation for a control unit? Roger Williams has a good explanation of how this works and 200 bhp is possible with this induction system.

Some photos of the Federal style manifold, plenum, and throttle body may be found here: Barry Yardley Article (Injectors can just barely be seen. Fuel rail not clearly shown.)  I'm sure you could use these parts with MegaSquirt or some other control system. You'd need to make your own wire harness and solve all the usual sensor issues. Is there any significant advantage of Federal parts compared with later (e.g. 14CUX) hardware? Does the plenum top sit a little lower?

The plenum does sit lower and if it still doesn't fit (depending on where your engine sits) you only have to machine one small area (up to 1.3" can come off) to make it fit. I like it because it's simple and I don't believe the MegaSquirt will run it, it's basically an analog system with a flapper valve/potentiometer control.

That's the beauty of the megasquirt or any of the other speed/density systems Tim.
You get to throw the barn door air flow sensor away!
You've got the basics with the manifold, injectors, throttle, sensors etc.
The ECU can pretty much be anything that you want to use.

I always appreciate your replies, but, while I am very good mechanically, I'm an idiot when it comes to electronics. That's what my IT guy is for. Hell, I can't even figure out my smart phone and I've had it for 7 or 8 years. I spent a good week on the MegaSquirt site and my brain filled up and ran out my ears.

I'm pretty happy if I can get my flip phone to open on the third try!
I know that most everyone here is pro Megasquirt, And so am I.
It's powerfull, cheap, and endlessly adjustable.
But , It's very intimidating for the novice.
So for your first system, I recommend the SDS systems highly.
They are straight forward, easy to understand, simple to set up, reliable and tune without the use of a computer.
It's not right to call it a beginners system as it's a very capable setup.
What it does very well is make sense to someone who doesn't tune a fuel system every day.
I've used them on everything from a 50 hp Renault to a 3800 hp twin turbo BBC so adjustability isn't an issue.
I have no affiliation with SDS but I recommend them highly.

Yep.
The EM5F will do all of that.
But you will not have idle speed control. It will be set manually.
Not a big deal but thought that you should know.
