Oldsmobile 215- V6 Camaro T5...What clutch pressure plate and TOB

I now have my engine and transmission mounted in my car, but I have yet to nail down the proper parts I need to make the Olds 215 and T5 mesh.

The engine is a 1962 Olds 215. The transmission is an '85 Chevy Camaro V6.

I sourced a 3-speed bellhousing and had it modified.

Do you already have the 215 flywheel? If you had the V8 T5 you could use the Buick 300 pressure plate and clutch. For the V6 T5 I would have the flywheel redrilled and use the S10 V6 pressure plate and clutch disc. HTOB or external slave with 215 clutch fork with T5 throwout bearing. Going from memory,others will know more current info.

I was lucky enough to get the flywheel when I bought the bellhousing.

I'd prefer to keep things mechanical at this point for the throw out bearing.

Any chance you have part numbers for this?

No part #'s. If you go to a auto parts store, just ask for a 85 S10 2.8 V6 clutch and pressure plate for a T5. Take the flywheel to the machine shop to be redrilled for the pressure plate pattern. I'm not a fan of HTOB's either. I've always used aftermarket external slaves  from Speedway Motors,CNC,Wilwood(push or pull depending on room) with 7/8" master cylinder. You may have to shorten the clutch fork right before the stock dimple. Drill a 3/8" hole. Use a Chevy 3/8"rocker ball on slave rod to pivot. Bracket to bell housing bolts or webbing on T5 depending on push or pull type.

Don't think that clutch disk is going to work.  Doesn't your V6 T-5 have a 14 spline input shaft?

Personally, I like a lighter flywheel & a smaller, lighter clutch.

Roverman, yes it's a 1930 Model A, with a Model T touring back, and a mix of all sorts of cars. A semi-traditional Hot Rod build. Except I'm using a 215, and not a Flathead. A bit off topic for the forum, but you guys have all the great info here!

MGV8- Yes, I have a 14 spline input shaft. It's out of a 1985 Chevy Camaro with a V-6.

MGB260- I WISH it was a V8 transmission. I bought it on Cl listed as a "trans, $25" and only a picture of the part number. If I find a V-8 trans for cheap, I'll put one in.

Bottom line, I'm not building this car for high horsepower. It's very light weight, and I live in the city.

I did call D&D today, and he needed a mess of measurements from me and said he would "build" me a pressure plate and clutch set-up. But "build" sounds like labor. I'd like to get this all done for around $250. I don't need race parts.

Here's a picture of where I stand right now. Still a long way from paint. I chose the 215 because a friend had it, and it seemed like a good fit for the application. A Chevy 350 would have been a lot easier/cheaper. But what fun is that?




I do own a Mini, so I have a bit of love for the British autos. They just need bigger engines!

Beau, Cool car!  If you look at the thread above I gave you the answer. I meant your cross reference was for a V8 T5. I knew you have a V6 T5 that is why I suggested the V6 S-10 clutch (right 14 splines) and the S-10 pressure plate is higher(thinner flywheel than the Camaro). About the same height as the V8 pressure plate but aproximately 9 1/4" clutch. It is simple to take your flywheel and S-10 pressure plate to a machine shop and redrill your flywheel. You could have some extra weight milled off while there but not more than a cleanup on the friction surface. Chris Gill just went through this a while back. You might also want the take your flywheel to your local clutch & brake shop. They can fix you up much cheaper.

Beau, I suspect your V6 trans is wide ratio? If so, I would consider "not" lightening the flywheel The standard weight one will help keep the rev's-up, between gear changes. A lighter disk, will be slightly easier on syncros'. This car will weigh 2,700 lbs +/- ? Were this a sports car, you might consider a lighter flywheel/ close ratio box. I like your engine choice. The flywheel I have came from a Buick 215. It seems pretty thin already.
 I have a really great machinist that does the work cheap (he did my bellhousing), so I'll give the S-10 set-up a shot.

Beau, while you're at it, have the flywheel and pressure plate balanced as an assembly, you won't regret it.

MGB-FV8- Thanks for the tip. I apologize for the basic questions. My engine knowledge in general is very small. I appreciate every little bit.

Roverman- Ford 9" with 3.50 Gears. '85 Camaro T-5 with 3.50 1st, .78 5th. 29" tall tires. I'm guessing around 150hp, 2500 pounds.

Beau, More info for you. If you switch to the V8 T5 later on you simply use a S-10 2.2 four cylinder clutch disc for the 26 spline input shaft.

Looks like Part # Mu1904-1(Advanced Auto), Nu1904 (Auto Zone) and NCF 1104065 (Napa). I found one in stock in town for $90 plus tax.

I didn't realize it until just now, but I spoke with Chris quite a while back to see what he came up with. He had someone set him up with his clutch so he didn't have any numbers or anything, just the name and number of the guy that sold him what he needed. I'm a poor kid building a Hot Rod. To save money, I need to find deals, so I want to know what I'm looking for so I can find the deals.  :)
