Fastest TR 7,8 ?

A "friend" of mine wants to go 200 mph at Texas or Maxton mile. Maybe 700 hp ?  Thanks, roverman.

Art, no idea what's needed in the way of horsepower or "big brass ones" but the Maxton Mile closed in 2011.  Will take a lot of HP to push a TR wedge that fast.

The "Maxton Mile" is now the "Ohio Mile," in Wilmington, Ohio. Check out page 104 of the current (September) issue of Hot Rod magazine.

Jim, That is GREAT news ! Save me about 3k miles, round trip. Who wants to attend in Sept ? First Coronado races and Mohave. Sept. looks like a busy month. FWIW, Craig Leinicke ran 118 mph on 108 rwhp, at Maxton, in his TR7. I plan to use identicle body configuration/cfd. Cheers, roverman.

The janspeed lemans TR7 with twin turbos went over 200 mph back in the day, but as the recent owner after driving described it as like beyond scary!

Beyond Scary. I guess that's where you're petrified and the sheer weight of your foot keeps it on the floor?

If we assume 118 MPH for 108 RWHP gives a 118 MPH top speed (optimally geared), it should take 526 RWHP to go 200 MPH for the same vehicle.  This is a terminal velocity calculation and ignores any time to accelerate.  Given additional data (two way coast down times from multiple velocities, accurate drag coefficient and frontal area, etc.), I can proved a better etimate.

Dan, and clan, Craig Leinicke may have that data, as I intend to use identical nose piece,(aero rounded),and some other enhancements. Sounds like over 600 hp, at the motor. Not an easy quest. Cheers, Art.

Craig is in the local (St. Louis) Triumph club but I've been doing the international travel gig and haven't been in touch
with the club this year.  I've spoken briefly to Craig about his project but IIRC we were discussing Rover engine stuff.
I'm not sure if Craig knows of my aero engineering background.

Drag does up with the square of velocity and the power required to overcome the drag goes up with the cube of velocity
so power requirements go up dramatically with speed.   You need minimal drag and good stability to play around 200 MPH.
Sometimes it pays to use ballast instead of down force because down force usually comes at the expense of added drag.
Minimizing the cross-sectional area and minimizing the drag coefficient are key, of course.

The good news is, should be considerably easier than El Mirage or Bonneville. Asphalt/concrete should definately assist the accelleration factor and directional stability.  Onward, roverman.

Received the "Maxton Mile", aero nose piece. No wind tunnel report, but "looks" slippery.   Onward, roverman.
