Pulleys

Hello all. I am making steady progress on my 302 conversion but have hit a small (I hope) snag. The engine is built up and I need to install pulleys. I have a Ford short water pump and I have found some pulley kits available but they are all for 4 bolt cranks, I have an older 3 bolt (28 oz balance). I have found no pulleys for a 3 bolt crank and a short water pump. I have found crank adapters (3 to 4 bolt), but they are 1" thick, which then negates the benefit of the short water pump. Is it possible to drill the 4 bolt main pulley to the 3 bolt pattern without weakening it to much? Are there any other options? Don, perhaps I missed the info, but do you plan to use a v-belt or serpintine belt and the later reverse rotation or old style rotation water pump?  The later 5.0L use reverse and the Explorer frton end incl timing cover is shortest available I think. The dampner should have adequate space to drill for 3 hole if necessary. I had to space my dampner .225 fwd to line up the W/P and Lower pulley.  Sound like you have a older model 5.0L due to the 28 oz. balance.  the later (except for the dampner) will bolt up.  later 5.0L are 50 oz balance.

You are correct that I have an older block, hence the 3 bolt crank and 28 oz balance. I plan on using a V belt single groove pulley with the standard rotation short pump. I have found a 2 groove set of pulleys that I think I could make work with the 1" crank adapter, but again this sort of negates the gains made with the short water pump. In fact the standard pump and pulleys would probably be cheaper and clearence about the same.

I have a 78 or 79 5.0 depending on who you ask or which numbers you look at.  Everybody has told me it's a 28 oz motor but it has an original 4 bolt balancer.  I hope it's a 28 because that's the way I built it; if not I can always use it to shake up paint cans.  I love fords, but wish they were as simple as Chevy's.  I'm faced with the same problem as you Don.
