Rebuilding the triumph 5 speed

I am putting a Buick 215 in front of the stock Triumph 5 speed trans. Trans is in good shape but has a lot of miles on it. I was thinking of rebuilding it and wondering if anyone had done this and had some pointers or suggestions. I have rebuild transmissions before but never a TR one.

I assume your box is from TR 7 ? There are various versions (bearings / gears) so when ordering spare parts it´s best to quote the serial number stamped on the cast boss on the RH side. I have rebuilt a TR7 box and recently a R380 box (more modern and stronger version). They are quite straight forward to rebuild. A repair manual is worth sourcing.

Hi Allan,
These Tran's are pretty straightforward to overhaul as Jukka says.
The biggest failure point is the oil pump and depending upon the version, various bearings.
There are metal upgrades available for the oil pump but in my experience the factory fibre gears are better.
They will tolerate some degree of debris that the metal ones won't.

The early ones had smaller input shaft bearings. Try to find one from a convertible TR7. They are a little more robust and hold up well behind a mild V8.

Put a new pump in it & overfill it with fluid.

I have the "weakest" TR 7 box behind a 4,6 engine and it has held quite nice in a 2000 lbs car with street tires.

Todd. Luckily mine is from a convertible so I lucked out there. I have owned this TR for 30 years now and everything seems to be a little better on the drop top cars. Thanks to you all for ypur comments
