Both of my GTs are later ones that came with the red/amber lens. I would like to convert them both the the all red lens. What all is involved? Is it just a matter of getting the parts and putting them on or do I actually have to make any modifications to the sheet metal?

If your GT has chrome bumpers it's just a matter of swapping parts. If your GT have rubber bumpers (e.g. the North American market 1974.5 model), then you'll probably want to add some steel below the lamp housings.  Otherwise, your lamps will look like this:

1971 MGB GT V8
Buick 215 w/ Rover heads, custom EFI & crank-fired ignition.
Custom front and rear coilover suspensions.

Both of mine are chrome bumpers. I guess I am now on the hunt for parts.

Moss, or any other MG parts supplier, carriers the lenses new.

Do I have to swap the base and trim ring as well or is it just the lens?

They're a different base & trim ring.  You can get the base pretty easily by posting a wanted here & on the MG Experience board.  Often on ebay too.  The lenses are typically cracked so best to get them new.  Two types -- after market & lucas.  Lucase are generally a little darker but either are good.  I have after market on mine & they show the light pretty well.  They also sell them w/both pieces in red or you can get the upper part (the turn sigal part) in amber.  I like that look better so that's what I did.  Moss, VB, The Roadster Factory, etc. all stock them.
