I have a 61 Buick 215/3.5 and a 64 buick 2 spd automatic from a 300. Will they work together? If not can they be made to?
Thanks  Bill

The bellhousings are different so they will not bolt up. The 2 speed is a Powerglide and some powerglides were made with a removable bellhousing. I don't recall what tranny Buick used in the '62 Special.

My recommendation is that you consider using the '64 engine if you can get it. That gives you many more transmission options including the 2004r OD 4 speed and the TH350. Plus it is a better engine.

Bill, If your trans is a 64', it will be a" super turbine 300", meaning a switch pitch convertor. Precious little will interchange with the Chevrolet powerglide.  If your install is a sports car, more than (2) speeds is advisable. The Borg Warner 3 speed auto, as used in Rover cars, is a direct fit. Using the detachable BW bell housing opens up other auto trans options, with modifications. Ford C4 and Aisian-Warner 3040L is a 3 speed od. with lock-up convertor. I suggest the search feature of this forum. Good Luck, roverman.

I think Art is right about the SP300 but isn't that a 3 speed? Not sure what was used behind the 215.

Jim and clan, just "seems" like more than a 2 speed, because of switch-pitch stator convertor. This feature is still going strong in muscle car builds, using B.O.P. turbo 400 trans. Handles big hp/torque and converter changes 1,000+ rpm. , with the "switch". The 215 Buick used a "baby Dynaflow", 2 speed auto , (5) element/Dual Path, air cooled torque convertor. This readily exlains the "elephant ears" on the rear of Buick and Olds 215"s. These ports are open on Buicks, to exhaust heated air from the air cooled,(aluminum) convertor. Onward, roverman.

Thanks for the responses. I thought the transmission would be a 3spd but i could not find a listing for anything but a 2spd in the 64 Special. I compared my trans to pictures of powerglide transmissions of that era and they look the similar other than the bellhousing. The bellhousing/transmission is one peice. I agree some other transmission would be better but a  friend wants the combo for a street rod and i had no idea if it was possible to mate the two together. Could one construct an adapter plate to join the two? I think the 300 crankshaft is slightly more than 1/2 inch longer than the 215 crankshaft so adding the adapter plate could offset that difference? Does that make sense?

Bil, IMHO, does not make sense. Obsolete trans, near obsolete engine. This means difficult to find parts for trans. Better engines and transmissions are easy to find and a better value. roverman.

Kennedy makes an adapter for 215/Rover to GM newer trans. 200R4 or TH700R would be much better.

I have a 1965 Buick 300 ci, 2 barrel with the SP transmission forsale, I recently removed from my 64 Buick Special if anyone is looking. It is complete from oil pan to air cleaner with starter, alternator, exhaust manifolds and I removed it in January this year. It ran great, no smoke, no noises but I had a 64 motor built for the restoration of the car. Apparently the story goes, the dealer changed the motor in the car in 1965 due to some issues with the orginal 64 motor. Let me know if u are interested.sorry all. I'm located in Ontario Canada. I can assist with crating and preparing it for shipping. Shipping charges are the purchaser's responsibility. I'm offering the engine complete for $450.00 or offers, and the transmission for $250.00 but can offer a deal at $600.00 for both the tranny, torque converter and the engine. PM me for ny more information. Thanks for looking.

That would be a good start, and the heads and intake could always be replaced with aluminum ones later. Where are you located?

If it helps a perspective buyer of the engine, I am going to Carlisle PA , just outside of Harrisburg PA, April 25 for two days and may be able to transport the "paid" engine or transmission there, for someone to pick it up there.

Thanks for looking.
