Replace crank driven oil pump gears (gerotor pump) or complete front cover with pump?

My parts vendor of choice, who is overall a decent guy and whom I tend to trust, tells me that he does not sell replacement oil pump gear sets for a reason. Namely because it's an "expensive gamble" because these parts are supposedly machined together and the replacement gear set may not fit exactly right. I know that proper alignment is critical for the gerotor pump to work correctly. My vendor does not sell replacement front covers, so he stands to gain nothing from giving me this advice. The LR manual seems to suggest the same thing as my vendor.

My question is to folks who have replaced the oil pump gears, what luck did you have with that in terms of oil pressure? I am wondering if anybody here had any issues with replacement gear sets.

Not having, personally rebuilt one of these pumps, I would ask, what are the service limits for wear and clearances ? Would this not be the deciding factor ? Good Luck, roverman.

Some years ago, when building up the Olds engine, I installed the higher volume gearset sold by D&D, followed the instructions faithfully, and never had a problem.

Are you referring to the later Rover crank driven, timing cover mounted,
oil pump or the earlier Rover/Buick oil pump that's driven off the
distributor gear and mounted in the timing cover?

I am referring to the later Rover crank driven pump, as installed in 94+ land rovers,this pump is used in "interim" front covers (94-95) and distributorless engines with GEMS (96-99) and BOSCH (99-04) engine management system. It's a gerotor pump:

To my knowledge the Buick 215 and old Range Rovers (up to 93 with multiple v-belt set up) oil pump was an entirely different design. It consisted of 2 gears, one of them was driven by the distributor gear. These pumps varied over years, with later ones having longer gears, but I don't remember when that change was made.

I have access to about 15 to 20 crank driven oil pump covers that are from used engines. If you need another cover let me know.

I've been told there were a lot of failures of those oil pumps so I'd be
inclined to not try to replace the gears. Does anyone know what the failures
were attributed to?

I might be interested in an interim cover with provisions for distributor.
Let me know the cost.

I will see what I can find for the intermediate covers that have the distributer provisions and crank driven oil pumps.
