hi need to know what 5 lug rotor will fit on stock mgb 1979 rdsr dont want to change calipers mine new want to go to ford pattern 5x 4 1/2 want to keep simple no wilwood etc thanks barry

Barry, if you're putting a 302 in your car (saw that on the "introduce yourself" post), you'll probably be swapping out the rear axle to get a better ratio anyway.  Ford 8" is a popular swap as is a GM axle - 10-bolt I think but not sure.  If you go the 8" ford route,  you can put "big ford" [aka 9" ford] ends put on it when it's narrowed.  Then you have a ton of after market or OEM brake choices.

thanks rob have a 8 and 8.8 ford since i have a steet rod hobby. can you tell me about what rotors i can swap out on front if i want to go 5 lug heard something about toyota truck which one and what needs to be done or do they just go on stock spindles thank you for the help five lug have many options for rims actually have some billitt specialty rims like on that great green car with small flares just don't want to go to that fastcars front end [it is a great piece  though] hoping just to change frt rotors  barry

This thread probably has the info you're after Barry.  http://forum.britishv8.org/read.php?7,17265

Looks like several OEM hub/rotor options available but all require at least some machining.  Alternative is Bill Guzman who does some very nice hubs in your choice of lug pattern.  I don't think he has them listed seperately on his web site but you can get his contact info there.  Note, he's on vacation so may not be available till after the new year -- don't recall when he said he'd be back.  Web site is www.classicconversionseng.com.

65-67 V8 Ford Mustang hub with 79-83 Toyota 2WD pickup solid rotor. Toyota rotor goes behind Ford hub.(edited) Early Mustang disk studs go through both. Bolting pattern moved out 1/8" on rotor. Might need machining and spacing of caliper.

Billet specialties does make some 4 lug wheels. depending on what style you want to use you can still run 4 lug in the front and what ever is on the rear you choose to use. You will have to contact them in regards to what styles and 4 lug patterns you can get as I do not remember at the moment. If you do contact them please post what you find as I will most likely be in the same situation.

That is the first time that I have seen this combo, do you know what wheel bearings and seals are required.  Any more info or location of info on this swap would be great

If there is a decent and cost affective way to change the front to five bolt I would never consider new 4 bolt wheels

Joe, Wheel bearings are the same as MGB. Bearing spacing is a little wider. I have the Mustang hubs on my 73 B project with Dodge  Intrepid 11.1 vented rotors and Toyota T100 4 piston calipers. I ground down the back of the spindle nut a little  and drilled the cotter pin hole further out. The right way would be to bore outer race hole 1/4"(3/16" it has come to my attention not all hubs have enough material) deeper, trim 1/4" off outer end and MGB seal will fit if  metal housing is flared slightly. Opposite mod as Chevy 68-72 Camaro,Chevelle,Monte Carlo hub, again same common bearings. I will have to pick up a set of Toyota pickup rotors and compare with MGB setup on the bench.

More info on Toyota pickup rotors. They bolt on separate from the lugs like MGB,more like MGC really only Ford pattern. The pattern on the rotor is 5 X108(4.25"). You could mill/slot 1/8" out to 4.5" and use the early Mustang V8 disc brake studs through the early Mustang lug holes. Or you could modify the Toyota hubs bearing races/bearings if possible. Have to go junkyard shopping I guess to see. Here is a picture of Toyota hub:

Toyota pickup hub uses SKF# BR3 outer bearing compared to MGB BR2. Inner bearing is BR5, MGB BR6. Outside  bearing outside diameter race is 1.9687, MGB 1.7810. Inside bearing outside diameter race is 2.5630, MGB 2.3280. Toyota seal bore is 2.677,MGB 2.441. Seems the right shimstock sleeve would make up the difference so you could use the MGB races, bearings and seal. Have to have one in my hands to see spacing between the bearings

Jim,

What year and/wheel size or model are those Intrepid rotors for? I've looked but only seem to be able to find an 11.7" rotor. Are they fronts or rears?

While I'm at, might as well ask about any additional specifics on the T100 calipers.

Getting ready to finally put together the front hub and steering stuff with my early Mustang hubs.

Here you go David, 1999 Dodge Intrepid front rotor for 15" wheels. 11.7 for 16-17" wheels. 1993 Toyota T100 4X4 4 piston front calipers. You have to use the Intrepid studs also(12mm thread). Studs for rear axle on mine are 12mm also (Firebird,Camaro Corvette) 10mm to AN3 adapter for braided stainless brake lines, then AN3 to IFF. Here are pictures courtesy of Rockauto.com

"You have to use the Intrepid studs also(12mm thread) studs for rear axle"

Jim, if I understand your last comment, the studs used for the front hubs are the Intrepid's 12mm rears. Is that correct?

Hubs are here, rotors and calipers are on the way so it looks like I'll be able to begin looking at assembling things. Anything else that you think might be helpful with this (caliper bracket info, any mods needed for the Intrepid studs in the Ford hubs, etc.) would be greatly appreciated. I'm going to drop off the hubs on Monday to have the 1/4" machined (as you noted earlier in the thread) and am hoping to get them back later in the week to bench fitting things.

Thanks for all of you help.

The quote above should end after parenthesis. The Intrepid front studs are perfect for the hub and rotor.Pull the studs in with a stack of washers and Intrepid lug nut. I also used the same thread studs on rear for same lug nuts and wheel lock conveniece. Caliper bracket will have to be offset from MGB (3 1/4") pattern to Toyota (3 1/2") pattern. Use poster board and veneer to make jig. Caliper goes slightly up and forward of stock position. If over 1/2" steel use aluminum. Remember calipers are left and right handed, bleeder goes on top.

Jim, I realize all the above is for Ford pattern, but do you know of anything particularly good for Chevy pattern? I'm familiar with the early Malibu disc/Dodge caliper setup but there is a mismatch on the diameter and the caliper is heavy. It would be nice to come up with something a bit better.

Jim, Just what's on the other thread (5 Lug hubs)in the Handling section pertaining to newer Camaro/Firebird rotors with Chevelle cut down rotor/hubs.

mgb260

This picture is of a TR7 conversion, but caliper adapter bracket would be similar.

This picture shows caliper bracket from MGB 3 1/4" to 3 1/2" caliper mounting  for 11.7 diameter rotor,Nissan caliper.

Correction on Mustang hub info. Outer bearing race must be bored 1/4"(3/16" some hubs do not have enough material) deeper and outer end trimmed 1/4" just opposite of Chevy hub mod! Seal is close to perfect. MGB seal housing can be flared out slightly to work.

BlownMGB-V8

Thanks Jim. That's something I'll have to work on before too long.

Jim, Here's what you need! 94 Lexus LS400,same aluminum calipers as Twin Turbo Supra.12.4" Rotor. Ford pattern though. You could use a spacer that is Ford to Chevy lug pattern.

For stock 4 lug hubs,14" wheels. 86-88 Toyota Cressida rotors like used in TR6 with 86-88 Toyota 4 cyl 4X4 caliper S12W-8 or 86 -91 Mazda RX7 Turbo II aluminum calipers. Here are pics of TR6 with Cressida rotor with Toyota caliper and the Mazda calipers on a Volvo.

Cressida rotor center hole must be same size as MGB. Mounting holes would be slotted inward slightly. Mazda caliper ears would be outside MGB mount holes.Simple bracket. Caliper would have Mazda ground off, could be polished. I wouldn't use anti-rattle clips on either, use residual valve. For master cylinder I would use 78 Ford Fairmont 7/8" aluminum cylinder on later  MGB and Wilwood compact 7/8" on older. If using Toyota caliper,Toyota lower mounting ear would be above MGB lower mounting area for custom bracket. Good looking setup with vented rotors,4 piston calipers for those who wish to retain 4 lug 14" wheels. A spacer may still be required for some rims.

MGB-FV8

That's the kind of stuff that I love reading; it's a lot more fun and better than buying expensive Wilwood brake kits.  I like the aluminum caliper for their "unsprung weight" value.  Thanks for sharing these good old salvage yard hot rodding options.

Where do you come up with all this awesome stuff, Jim?!!
