Fuel pick up

My 70 BGT will not pick up the last 2-3 gallons of fuel.  So I put a later model float assembly in, the kind with a pick up line.  It does get the gas that the built in will not get.
Problem:  Before installation I wired up the float assy and it would run the gauge just fine.   When I put 4 gallons of gas in the tank, the gauge reads about 1/16 of a tank.
Is it possible that the float is hitting the old pick up line?
If so, how do I fix that?

Is it possible to remove the filler pipe/hose and insert an inspection mirror for a peak?
While your at it, you can check resistance values of the sender to ensure operating condition......10 to 35 ohms for full tank and 210 to 270 ohms for empty (info courtesy of 'MGB Electrical Systems' by Rick Astley)

The ohms are correct.
I will try to see throught the filler, but I feel sure the new float is fouling the old pick up tube.

Fixed.
Here is what I did.
Drained the tank again.  Took the new float out and looked in again.  Reached in with a long pry bar and pried the inner end of the pick up line loose from the bracket.  I was hoping that I could just bend it out of the way.  Oh no.  It then flopped around in the tank, but would not come loose.  
I used a coat hanger and looped it around the line and pulled it over to the hole.  Then.... ready.... I cut it off with a hack saw blade.
Took the longer piece out and shoved the short piece out of the way.
 I put the whole thing back together and put in 5 gal of gas.  Now it read 1/8 tank.  Real progress.
Emptied the tank again.  Did some measuring and found that the bracket that held the old pick up line in the center of the tank was fouling the new float.
Long pry bar again and bent that down flat.
Now it works.  5 Gal now reads just shy of 1/2 tank.
