Hi Guys,

I continue to acquire parts for my conversion but need some advice on which brand of Buick 300 waterpump to purchase.  There seems to be all prices but I am advised to only purchase one with an aluminium body.
Can anybody supply a brand part number and a supplier.
Thanks,
Richard Woodley

Hi Richard! Good to see ya, here.

I bought mine years ago at Advance Auto.  I'll see if I can find the part #.

Richard,
Take a look at the offerings from Rockauto.
http://www.rockauto.com/

 One example attached.......

300WP.jpg

When I was building my Olds 215 engine, I was advised by D&D to buy the A/C version of the WP that angles the inlet pipe underneath the alternator mount.(something to think about).
Otherwise, have your local Carquest or NAPA order one in and have a look - you are not committed to buy.

"I was advised by D&D to buy the A/C version of the WP that angles the inlet pipe underneath the alternator mount."

The Buick 300 water pump does exactly that, as opposed to the Buick 215 WP that is at the 9 o'clock position.

Not a good pic of it, but there is a Buick 300 WP angling under the alternator.

Thanks for the info.  Graham:  It was the Rockauto site I was looking at but they offer 5 different ones.  They say the Bosch was O/E so it could be the aluminium body.  I am going with A/C so do need the Buick 300 pump.   Rock also lists the AC Delco kit but nothing on if the body is aluminium.

Thanks for you input.

Found my water pump box. Part # on hte box is WP-382 also a FP1318 on there. These numbers are 9-10 years old, though.

Good water pump reference page:

Sometimes you can get them on e bay, might want to check there before ordering one at the auto parts stores.

From D&D's website.......

$60.00        #3150       Water Pump – Buick 300 style.  Mandatory on MGB's with air conditioning. Outright, core exchange not required.
$40.00       #3150-X     Water Pump – Buick 300 style.  Mandatory on MGB's with air conditioning. Core exchange required.

I'm guessing that one of these is aluminum and one is cast, but to be sure,  I'd give Mark or Dan a call.

I just did a bit of checking with a reman Cardone WP (purchased locally at Carquest) that I had as a spare for my Olds engine - part # 58-110. It appears to be the same Cardone WP listed for a '64 Buick 300 engine on the Rockauto site.
......and I can say that it is aluminum.

Two questions:
1) what mystery metal are the non-aluminum water pumps made of? (A zinc alloy?)
2) why do you guys prefer aluminum?
(A non-aluminum pump came on my engine, and lasted a LONG time.)

Curtis, " (A non-aluminum pump came on my engine, and lasted a LONG time.)"   Magnetic ? If so, likely cast iron. If not, alum/die cast aluminum. For aluminum blocks/heads, we want all aluminum components connected with cooling system,( no galvanic reaction). In leiu of that, a zinc anode,(available with radiator cap), is good. Also, run a BIG ground strap directly to starter,(reduce electrolysis, hi current flow), through block. Good Luck, roverman.

Art, what did you do to get around the sensor being brass I believe?  I just used the 300 waterpump from Auto Zone and I believe it was cast aluminum.  Also don't forget to get a plug for the connection for the A/C as that will need plugged unless you are doing the A/C.  I couldn't find a way around that.

Michelle and clan, biggest culprit is iron to alum.,ferrite? Most of our beloved alum. V8's used brass/copper radiators, biggest problems were early anti freeze formulas, iron and indifference.  roverman.

A little off-topic, but I thought I'd grab a couple old 215 water pumps and take snapshots of them in case they'll help anyone.

I believe one of them is an original Buick pump because it has a 1963 date code cast into its body. It also has noticeably smoother casting surfaces than the other pump. It surprised me that this pump has an iron impeller. The other pump still has some blue paint on it... which I think is an aftermarket thing. (A long, long time ago I painted over the blue paint with aluminum paint, but that's partly worn off.) The aftermarket pump has a non-ferrous impeller. The two pumps also have different reinforcing ribs. The pulley mounting flanges are at two different positions - I believe that indicates that the older pump is from a car that came with air conditioning.

I searched the web, looking for water pumps. The prices vary from ~$19 for a rebuilt pump to over $75 for new. I saw a new one on the NAPA web site that looked good for about $48 and picked it up. The Olds engine that I got came with an iron pump.

The NAPA pump has the outlet angled down where the iron pump looks horizontal. But here's something I found interesting - the impeller on the iron pump fit closely into its pump body, about .045", but the NAPA pump's impeller was about as close, but  the ends of the vanes were machined away about .200"!

Personally, even though the NAPA pump is a work of art, the relieved impeller is a real downer. It's probably going back while I do another search.

Does anybody have any of the other newly made pumps like the Airtex? Are the vanes similarly cut back?

Reviving an old one.. My project is moving forward slowly.. I found I am going to need the short water pump and the one I have is shot.. The  Cardone 58-108 is out of stock everywhere Ive looked . They have taken to requiring your core be sent in for rebuilding.. I am going to need a 1.5 inch outlet..  Are the other Newer short Buick pumps mechanically a direct replacement? Like the Cardone 55-11152?

tr8todd

I used front drive Buick V6 water pumps on my TR8 race car years ago.  They bolted up to the timing cover and were shorter than the stock ones.  Of course I had to redesign every bracket and pulley on the front, but that gave me a chance to go with underdrive pulleys, which was the ultimate goal.  It didn't hurt that at the time you could walk into any parts store and walk out with a rebuilt pump for $20.

Giving the Inflationary policies of the Federal Reserve their due.. I does appear that the market has provided...

The Cardone 55-11152 is listed as being brand new and a direct replacement for the 64 Buick 300.. Im having a little trouble verifying the flange to hub length. One source has it at 3.65 Inches. Ill have to call this week to verify.
