GT Work Weekend

Several of you expressed an interest in helping to finish the Roadmaster, and maybe setting up a weekend for next month. Right now the 18/19th and 25/26th look promising, so I need some feedback on who can make it and when. Most of these small tasks could be squared away over the course of one weekend if we had enough guys working on the car, so what'ya say guys, can we knock these out?

Incidentally, the money is in the bank, about $1200 after Dale's check clears. Also Graham is near making a radiator recommendation and I think we might be able to have one here by then. The engine will probably have to come back out for the HTOB so we'd better plan on doing that first.

Below is a list of small tasks that we can take care of:

-Install front brake calipers/install master cylinder/bleed brakes
-Install HTOB/clutch master/bleed (Brian is exchanging for a shorter unit)
-Install shifter
-Install fuel pump, connect carb, check operation
-Install engine wiring
-Install throttle linkage
-Install battery
-Install dash/connect gages/hook up wiring
-Install seats
-Install new e-brake pawl
-Install console
-Install spark plugs/wires/distributor
-Install PCV plumbing
-Install hood struts
-Install hatch struts
-Install radiator/hoses/wiring
-Install interior trim
-acquire and install the correct lug nuts

Max thinks the 25th works for him.

David Kirkman may be able to make it that weekend. I don't know what other weekends either David or Max might have available.

June is shot for me.

I'll look at my July schedule. The MGC meet in Auburn is towards the end of the month. I'll have a couple of weekend at the pharmacy mixed in as well. I'll find some time...Pete and I can make it down sometime....maybe we can do something during the September gathering as well.

The weekend of the 25th, I believe I have a Scout camping trip at my sister's bosses 200 acre wood, that I arranged.  I kinda need to be there.

I sent out a group e-mail, hopefully that will help us organize. We need to add missing names to the mailing list.  Carl is right, we are talking about June. (Rick, those dates don't match weekends in June. Probably we're all tied up for the rest of the month anyway.) We want to try to get as much done as we can before September when Pete has his cook-out so maybe we'll get a chance to drive it around a little. The 25th is looking strong but there's no reason we can't do both the 18th and the 25th. A moderate crew each weekend would probably do more than a huge crew on one weekend. But either one is fine.

Dave Kirkman can come on either weekend, we and so can Dave VanWyck so we may just do both weekends. It'd be a quick way to get a lot done.

I agree the moderate crew will work best-- say 4 people?  Not enough "bench work" to spread out 6 people.    

I'd like to make it when others are going to make it.   The 18th/19th is an SCCA race weekend for a friend, but he's not positive that he's ready to race yet.   So, that *might* end up being available for me.   If that one ends up looking better for more attendees, let me know.   So far, seems I might be flying solo on the 25th..


Now, to ask that which has been bothering Me:  What is an HTOB?  :-)

HTOB = Hydraulic Throw Out Bearing
It's a poor excuse for a regular TOB, a clutch fork and a slave cylinder......but sometimes one doesn't have a choice.

That's generous of you Bill, but I think we're in pretty good shape on that.

btw, how's the blower motor running? Are you getting any unevenness in distribution? (Asking because I'll be starting on a new intake in a week or so for my car.)

It's running good! I have the boost cranked up to 8.5-9 psi now. I'm pretty sure I wont go any higher then that, since it runs pretty strong and I dont want to blow'er :-) up!
The cylinder distribution does move around a bit, due to the bypass valve opening and closing. Also the center cylinders do get a tad more air because they are closer the blower outlet. However I have been able to tune around it using dual VE tables. All of the spark plug colors are nice and even now.
I probably will give MSIII a try when it comes out. It is suppose to be sequencial injection. Plus have a 6x6 trim tables for each injector, which sounds pretty cool!
Two things I would do if was going to build another intake manifold. 1st I would probably extend the intake port runners closer to the square inlet area.
2nd I would build a passage from the center of the intake inlet floor around under the manifold and up through to the bypass port of the blower. This should eliminate any air flow changes that may occur when the blower bypass opens/closes. Pretty sure there would be enough room between the bottom of the intake and intake/lifter valley gasket.
Not sure if you can visualize what I'm talking about, but I have it pictured in my head!

Sort of makes sense. I guess this really ought to be on another thread but maybe OK if we keep it short. I think I'm going to use an intercooler core, that helps even out the distribution and I also have a lot less of a height limitation, so what I'm thinking about right now is to extend the runners out past the middle of the intercooler and then leave about a 1-1/2" tall plenum above it and I think that might take care of the distribution issues. The other intake worked well, but it had the core at an angle. Anyway the pressure drop across the core, slight as it is, should be enough to equalize flow through it. That's the current working theory anyway.

July 24-26 I will be in Auburn, IN for the MGC meet...and in Indy for the Brickyard 400.

I will be out-of-commission for a few weeks beginning August 3rd, as I become a "bionic man" that morning, receiving a new hip.

Steve and Max are coming for the first weekend and Dave Kirkman and Dave VanWyck are coming for the second.

Tom Cain dropped off a radiator yesterday.  It is from a Jag XJ6. He said that was the one Graham had said would work.  It looks good.

Nothing I can think of right now. By the way, I found the trigger ring for the pertronix. It was in the box, I just didn't know what I was looking at.

I've boxed up all the ignition stuff to send to Jeff and will get that out tomorrow.

Here's the lineup. Steve is expected to arrive sometime tomorrow evening, Max around 9:00pm Friday and Dan B about the same time. I don't know for sure when Carl will get here, perhaps a little after that.

The following weekend (25th) Dave Kirkman will get here early Saturday and I think Dave VanWyck plans to do the same.

Good News! The downstairs bathroom is now operational, so the basement makes a pretty good bunkhouse, especially with the separate entryway. Hey, nothing is too good for this gang of Deviants!
