Narrowed Chevy rods

Hi,

I recently bought an set of Crower Maxi-Lite rods for one project.



An stock P76 rod and the Crower.



With ARP 2000 bolts



Now need to be machined.

I have may be an stupid question but when chevy rods are narrowed to suit RV8/Buick 215 crank, they are machined both sides or only on one side ?

If they are only machined on one side they become asymetrical like offset rods of later 4.2 and 4.0/4.6.

Better do both sides Dimitri. The stock rods generally have no offset.

As I understand bearing need to be machined in same time as the rod.

Check to see if you can use the smallblock Buick or Rover bearing shells. If you can then there is no need to machine them. Also, there is usually generous side clearance at the piston, enough to fudge it one way or the other if you have to.

Clevite do a bearing for the Rover V8 that will fit nicely ... either that or original vander's but they are rare amd expensive.

I love capscrewed rods.. There is probably as much or more  clearance at the shoulder than the P-76 rod and look at how much more beef there is on the Crower rod.

In my case I can't use Rover bearing because my rods are for 2.1'' rod journal size. So I intend to use rod bearing spacers aviaible in several sizes:

Be real careful about going oversize on your rod bearings, especially with aftermarket rods. Rod to cam clearance is tight and can really limit your valve lift, especially with the larger stroke engines such as the 340/350. I had to clearance my rods on the top shoulder and will need a reduced base circle cam for any valve lift approaching .500", so make sure to check that. The #6 and 8 rods are the worst.
