Buick 300 front oil seal

So I need a timing cover oil seal for my hybrid Olds/Buick  215/300/292. It has a 300 crank with the 300 timing cover and a neoprene seal in place of the rope seal. Before taking the old one out I couldn't identify it, so I researched the interwebs, mostly here at British V8, and saw that folks used a 3.0 liter V6 timing seal. OK, picked one of those up at Autozone, $5, easy. Got home, pulled the old seal, hmmm, the V6 part fits the crank/damper fine, but is loose in the timing cover. The old seal is National 6988H, which is an old Ford automatic transmission seal. Phil and Ray Baker built this engine for me 20 years ago, and they're not around to ask about it. I don't know if they opened up the cover to fit this seal or picked it out of a parts catalog cause it was the best fit.

Any thoughts?
