52.  Today, with most cars requiring their first "tune-up" at 100,000 miles, most of the younger generation aren't forced to deal with the mechanical consequences of owning a vehicle.  My first car was a '69 VW Bug P,O.S.  If I didn't fix it when it broke (which was often), I was walking.  And I think that was pretty normal for my contemporaries in High School.  Cars broke more often, so even if you weren't trying to improve the car, you at least developed a passing knowledge of how things work.  So since a higher percentage had mechanical experience, a higher percent became builders and innovators.  I would expect this trend to continue as cars become even more efficient, powerful, and reliable, and government regulations continue to restrict our activities.
