fuel pump

i have realize that my engine has a mechanical fuel pump. dose the engine have to use this pump or would the MGB electric pump work   or would u suggest i use the mechanical one?

Shouldn't be a problem switching from mechanical to electric fuel pump - block off plate required for the old mechanical pump hole and a pressure match for the electric pump (which should be mounted close to the fuel tank for best performance)..
A std MG 'SU' diaphragm type fuel pump typically puts out about 2-1/2 psi.

If you use the message board's search feature, you'll find numerous threads about pump alternatives. There's also a new-old-stock Facet electric pump for sale (cheap!) in our classified ad section.

I can't think of a single car on this website that's using a mechanical fuel pump, but I've often wondered how much more reliable these cars might be if we did.

Edelbrock's 1404 is the most popular carb for Buick 215s on this website, although some people have used Rochesters or Holleys. (Edelbrock carbs are similar to the Carter designs they were adapted from.)  Here's a link to the owner's manual for an Edelbrock carb. Fuel pumps and specifically fuel pressure requirements are discussed on page five.

its the Oldsmobile 215 and i have a carburetor from a ford f250

Response is a bit tardy, but I used the stock mechanical pump in my GB along with the stock Rochester 4GC carb, as Buick designed it.  I did however, install an electric pump back by the tank to use as a booster to prime the carb and aid starting after a long idle period.  The added restriction of this pump does not  restrict the flow of gas enough to matter.
