Using a starter for reverse movement of car

I will be using a Lenco 2 speed(forward only). I need a clever way to use a gear reduction starter, for reverse movement of the car, at drags/etc., while engine is running. I prefer at front end of driveshaft. Perhaps a small ring gear mounted on front yoke ?  Anybody ? Thanks, roverman.

With the need of a good size ring gear, wouldn't that take up a bit of tunnel, not a bad idea but, what does a reverse unit run for a Lenco?

Just to mess with you Art,
What about a hydrostatic drive? Has reverse and infinite gear ratios.
You can toss the entire driveline including the diffy to save weight.
Lets you run a drive motor to all 4 wheels if you want to.
As a matter of fact what about a hybrid of sorts?
The engine would run an inverter style generator and you could run traction motors at all 4 wheels. Packaging would be easy, suspension would be simple. The torque advantage of the electric motors would get you out of the hole like a bullet and the engine can run at it's torque peak for the whole run.
It's just crazy enough to work.

I'd use a flux capacitor to put the car back in time to where it was before it went forward.  You might check some of the LoCost bike engined car forums for ideas.  These guys are always looking for a way to go backwards.

"That" be a webbsite ? I could cut a hole in the floor, and "Bed Rock It", that's pretty far back.Waittaminutt, This car has Pedals...why not pedal backwards ? Are we thare yet ?Oh wait... Quaffe makes a reverser for a mere $1,500. Maybe I should have titled:  "Backwards On A Budget"

"With a good size ring gear", what might that be ? Have we ever had a car stall, and used the starter, to get out of the way ? I have, it was quite slow-BUT, it was also cranking the engine + the car ! I suspect taking the engine load out of the equation, will reduce starter load dramatically ? One person, can push an lbc, and we are not 1 HP.  Onward, forward and reverse, roverman.

I know, put the starter on a lever arm so it drops down and engages the earth. Gear ratio, 3/4": diameter of the earth. Crawling,

Honda Goldwing motorcycles use this for backing up. You raise a lever then press the starter button. You can use it with the engine running in neutral, makes backing up a 1200lb loaded motorcycle a breeze.

When I was drag racing years ago the alcohol dragsters and funny cars used a 2 speed Lenco with a seperate reverser. The fuel cars are direct drive and they also have a reverser. I think it is a dogging type gear because I have seen them really jerking to get it engaged.
