The terms "shortblock" and "longblock" refer to partially assembled or partially disassembled engines.  The basic difference is whether or not cylinder heads have been bolted onto the engine block. (Shortblock means without heads.) If your mechanic is trying to mock things up, an extra dissembled engine or two would be extremely useful. Once an engine is fully assembled, it's heavy and hard to move about.

How do you intend to source your engine, the V8's come with different front covers and the best one  that will work is the SD1 and you will need the P6 waterpump and the P6 crank pulley or a modified SD1 crank pulley, you will also need the P6 alternator cradle and suitable alternator,  and conversion engine mountings brackets available from V8 conversions.

Just to be clear, you can use the engine from the discovery or 3.9 range rover but you will have to change the front cover as above  or the engine will not have enough clearance at the front and will foul the rack and possibly the front crossmember.

You can source an engine for as little as £250 and spend no more than a £1000. on a rebuild and upgrade, if you can get  a complete  later 3.5 injection engine that can be made to fit inder the bonnet, the carb SD1 set up will not fit, so you would need a new manifold and carb approx £500.00

It is advisable to do all you homework first to avoid costly errors so keep asking questions, if you provide me with an e-mail address I will send you a link to how to do it.

The Defender 3.5L engine is a post SD1 engine and will work.  The Lt77 that is installed in the defender would be to costly to make work since it is designed to be mounted to a transfer case.  The output shaft, tail piece, shifter are all wrong for MGB application.
