Okay, here's a totally different idea.  


Imagine if some grant money were available to fund an electric hot-rod project.  Plenty of ratty old cars have been packed full of lead-acid batteries and powered by forklift motors. I haven't seen one yet that gets me excited. (Not even this one: <a href="http://mgaguru.com/uta_mga/">UTA's electric MGA</a>.)  But for over a hundred years electric cars have been "the future of the automobile", right?  I'm imagining an MG or Triumph that could keep up with a Tesla on a racetrack, have a 200+ mile range between charges, AND that's detailed to the level of Dan's GT or Calvin's TR6. Obviously, it would have to be a significant grant. If the money existed, how many of you would pitch-in to build The Ultimate Electric Hot-Rod"?

No question, I'm in. In fact we have some pretty advanced plans already on the board. I'd have to talk to my partner on the project about what level of participation and a lot would depend on what level of technology, but yeah. Definitely. BTW, Dan B was telling me about some new electric/hybrid that the guy drove from Florida and was getting over 100 mpg. More details would be helpful.

I have a hard time getting excited about the batteries currently being used, as well, Curtis.  Is there some promising news in that department?

Clan, While your trolling for sponsors, why not one that "really" counts, a hi performance battery manufacturer, that needs publicity ? This "is" a promotional vehicle-yes ?  I'm thinking with the connections/contacts that BadAss-I has earned, this car should be welcomed to important, for sake of promotion/educational events , ie. Power Tour, Optima Invitational, etc/etc. ?  Onward, roverman.

Our mail lady has a Zenn electric van and said Eestor is coming out with a ultra capacitor that will have a 300 mile range. You will be able to plug in and charge up in 5 minutes with inductive fill cord at special stations.  I think her little van is AC inverter drive.

I talked to Tom and he's open to the idea, he is an Engineer of great talent, definitely an asset to have involved. Some of the ideas for the concept car he and I have been discussing may apply, some may not, but the collaboration can only help, provided we preserve our interest in the more creative aspects.

I think getting a grant to fund the build is crucial however and the sooner the better. It seems that having a successful track record should be helpful. Does anyone know a bit about the grant process and a practical approach to applying for one?

I was a student in the building next door at UTA when they built that MGA, and never heard a word about it.  They also have a formula car race team out of their engineering department I didn't know about until I graduated.  They sure are good at keeping secrets around there!
