Remote Oil Filter Hoses

I know you guys think I'm a moron for asking these dumb questions, but here's another one. I'm about to buy my AN hoses and fittings for my remote oil filter and was wondering what size would be best (-06, -08, -10, -12). I don't want to restrict oil flow but I think if I go too large the hose might be too stiff to bend and put stress on the fittings. What do you guys think?

Paul, I used a A/M block adapter kit,( good quality) and had a hydraulic shop fab the hoses after I got length correct. NOTE, my filter & housing are mounted at the left rear of the block for ease of change and no mess. The kit came with 1/2" hose and I think that is near what they made. The 8 AN would be the normal size I think. Also, i ported all the holes to ease the sharp turns and enhance the smooth flow of oil. Keep on Plugg'in .

SBF right? What size are your internal galley passages? I'm guessing about 1/2" so there's your size.

1/2" ID is roughly equivalent to AN -12 ID. Just to make sure, I measured a piece. That's what I'm running for my SBF dry sump motor on the recommendation of Jones Racing.

Perhaps I used the incorrect info. I thought AN (army-navy Spec) was the AN size divided into 16. 8An 8/16 , 12AN 12/16 ,etc. Where did I get confused?

By definition, you are right Kelly. But I have seen references like this one that suggest in real life the ID can run a bit smaller than specified: http://www.angelfire.com/fl4/pontiacdude428/ANHose.html. Maybe the difference accounts for slight swelling when under pressure?

According to my Parker dealer AN-8 would be 1/2" and AN-12 would be 3/4".

I'm sure right Jim but that's not what mine measures. The 3/4" number also doesn't match the business end of the AN fitting which is more in line with the 1/2 " number. Who figures this tuff out? You'd think it would be pretty straight forward.

Just match the size of the port it is leaving or going to whichever is larger and add a size if it has to go a long way or has sharp turns.

Isn't that a military specification? You wouldn't expect that much variation. But then again sometimes the automotive aftermarket does strange things...

Paul, unless you're running a high volume oil pump and heavy weight racing oil the dash 8 lines wiil be fine. Some fittings in that size may have slightly smaller IDs but it won't matter to a non-full race engine. I've run -8 hose on my Midget for years now including a bit of time on road courses and no oil pressure problems.

Thanks, I went to Smiley's Racing yesterday and bought -08 fittings. I'm working on my steering and wanted to make sure of clearance in the area of the steering shaft around the block mounted remote adaptor. I plan to use steel braded lines but didn't get them because I haven't decided exactly where I will mount the filter adaptor so I don't know the lengths. I'll mount the filter after I get some other things done because I have a little more latitude with it's placement. A little at a time when it cold outside.

Paul if you check around you should be able to find steel braided hose with a clear urethane jacket. Stays a lot cleaner.
