Rear end

I have a modded TR6 with a regular(ish) motor in it.
It has an LSD, CV axles and all that good stuff, so I know about them already.

I was sorta tossing the idea around of building something a bit livelier, especially when I found the cost of an LS1 and T56 used  (Ok, I was tossing the idea around of building something nuts - I admit it, I have a problem).

Now my problem is what could I use for the back end.

I know I could put a beam axle in - say a cut down 8.8, but I'd sorta like to keep the IRS.

I'm not sure the R200 and the CVs are up to the job, so I'm trying to figure something else that could go in instead.

Preferably something that would handle a modded LS1 and not snap, and also something that parts are readily available for (so not a Jag back end).

Anyone else ever think about this, so I can get pointed in the right direction, or would it need a call to Moser and some leaf springs?

TIA, Alan

Alan, have you considered the Ford 8.8? T-Birds had a strong IRS that just might work, 2 front ears by the pinion and a variety of rear cover mounts including a 2 bushing cover. Other housings are available too.

The 8.8 t-bird rear ends are pretty good
What about a corvette rear end,they use a Dana 44 ring&pinion

So just to drag this back kicking and screaming from the grave - for the next person who goes down this road.

I was looking at a couple of Z sites, and I also glanced at LS1Tech. It looks like contrary to my belief, the shortnose R200 ~is~ up to the job - so long as I don't go crazy with LS1 performance goodies. With that in mind it looks like the regular TR6 LSD upgrade is back on the table as a candidate - assuming I can find halfshafts that'll handle the torque.

I say that because I've not had a lot of luck with my CV conversion.

Talked with Richard Good and have his CV setup. I don't know if you do Alan? Richard said that his new uprated spline axles can handle 400 hp to the ground OK and they use the same hub setup as the CV setup.

Ken Schmidt's TR6 which I was able to drive, has the LSD TR6 differential in there. His car is neck snaping with his older style 350 chevy engine(with and auto tran). He hasn't had any problem with it yet. Of course he drives it way harder than I would.

I have the same CVs he was selling until recently - I had them custom made for my 6 by a place in Florida.
I got the first set ever made, and I had a couple of problems - that ended with an inner CV disintegrating on me at the TRials in September.

I also cracked a mount from the R200 conversion, a sight that filled me with joy when I saw it.

To be fair, I had a driveline shake that could have contributed to the problem, and RG provided me with another mount on his nickel, which was gracious given the amount of time it had sat there before being driven. You can understand though why I'm a little gunshy about this, especially given the pain involved with retrofitting a solid axle ~after~ the body is on.

I sent Richard a note yesterday about the new sliding spline axles he has. He's using 1310 UJs in them, which are good for 400hp as you said. The hub is from an SHO Taurus with a new carrier, so it ought to be ok, but I'm curious about both the slider and the new design CV axles he's having made.

The CV setup I have, he said, there were high performance VW CV's that have been turned down to fit the trailing arm. I looked at a friend of mine that has a 87 Turbo Porsche. He had the engine out which exposed the Cv axles. They looked very close to or the same as RG CV's.

Wow! that photo makes me want to do some more reinforcements in that area, or some kind of help in that area which is where all the torque ends up. Its good that RG stood behind his product, nice to hear.

Hmm!,  RG making new CV's. Need to come up with a larger hole in the trailing arm or make new trailing arms that have a better geometry setup would be nice.

Thanks for sharing,
Calvin

Well actually to be strictly accurate they are turned down 928 CVs - unless the design was changed after I had that frist set made. I sorta doubt it though.

I went kind of overboard on my rear, a custom Moser M9.  I have an LS1/T56 going in my GT6.  I thought about going independant but didn't want to spend the money on a custom setup and don't really know enough to piece together my own i.r.s..  I know alot of people with 3rd generation RX7's switch to LS1 power when the reliable(hah!) rotary gives up.  The independent setup in those cars can handle some power, I am not sure how one would go about cutting it down to fit our small cars.  Other than the space concern I think a straight axle is plenty good for a street car.  My setup has cut down my hatchback space, see picture, but otherwise seems to be good, althought I haven't it the road yet.  When properly designed they exhibit great handling and traction characteristics.

Alan,
I think I saw you had a post in 6-pack wondering if there are stiffer springs other that RG's spring. You may want to contact Jim Prettyleaf for as he stated he was using some 800+ spring rate on his autocross TR6.

Take a look at what David Graham did with his Stag. Similar to a TR6, no?

Alan,

Jim's car also has a custom rear IRS from a C3 Corvette.

Plus one of our sponsors here has an IRS for the MGB and is looking to develop an IRS for the TR6.

Don,

I have designs on a very rowdy project. I just need the client with the car and the need to have it built..
