Did a compression test on my stroked Olds 215, not good. #4 cylinder at 50 lbs.

Scott, looks like you got your breather caps came too. Looking pretty shiny! Did you do the headers too?

Gswest236

I had sandblasted and painted the headers with high temp paint not too long ago, so they should be good to go. I have to look at them again to be sure.

I finishing drilling and tapping the hole and installed the new fitting with Teflon tape. Looked great! Then I looked at the female fitting that connects the oil line and had a heart attack. It looked like the fitting would not have enough room to rotate onto the new fitting. So, I got the fitting off the line and thank God it just clears enough to turn! Didn't think about that or I would have drilled the hole further over for clearance. Got Lucky for a change!

A little touch up and the headers will look fine. The Jet Hot coating would be nice though. At this point putting shiny parts back on is providing immediate gratification.

I went about getting the distributor ready and thankfully the MSD/Holley guys were kind enough to send my old wire plug with the new (Remanufactured I'm sure) distributor. I wished they would have cut it above the soldered wires so I could see which wire went to each of the 2 new wires, they're different colors. I took pics and I have a shot that I'm pretty sure shows the red wire connected to the orange/black wire. Just to be sure I called MSD and got a tech guy to help me. Problem is he wanted me to look at the MSD control box, it's a 6AL Multispark unit from 17 years ago. The box was installed on the passenger side fire wall behind the A/C unit. They must have done the AC after the fact and didn't consider access as a priority. I already took the AC components out of the engine bay; it had a leak and would not cool. The AC hoses were run through the inner fender well and fiber glassed in place. So, replacing a leaking hose was not going to be easy. Out came the AC unit which was a 3 bandaid job! now I have access to the box but it doesn't matter, the wires have been altered somewhere between the box and the distributor so there's nothing I can figure by looking at the box. I'm just going to wire it up red to the orange and white to the other one. Anybody want an AC unit? It's slightly damaged.

Scott, MSD has a wiring diagram for the 6AL box I'll post but you may want to do what Jon and I did and use a GM 4 pin unit.

Thanks Jim, The MSD guy had me go their website and we pulled up the wiring diagrams. All my wires are wrapped in elec tape and what comes out to the distributor is red and white wires which aren't MSD wires. So, along the cars life someone has gone in and connected these 2 wires to the original wires. Somewhere in the bundle of wrapped wires there's the original ones connected to the red and white ones that were connected to the distributor.  What is the 4 pin GM connector your talking about and how would I use that here?
This pic shows how the wires were connected before I sent it off. The red looks like it goes to the orange.

Gswest236

Jim, the diagrams you post show 4 wires coming from the dizzy. I've got only 2.

mgb260

Posted the wrong diagram. This one will help you identify the wires when you untape them. If you look under the distributor cap you will find two VR wires, one trigger and one ground. It'll be easy to match up now.

4 pin HEI module is normally in the distributor in 75-80 GM V8's. It would replace the MSD 6A box.

Is it really electrical tape or standard vinyl wrap on the harness?
Carl

Gswest236

Not sure which tape, it might be vinyl. It's black and I assumed it was electrical tape. In the mean time, I'm getting the accessaries cleaned and organized and will be getting new hoses and a new belt next. I've seen it's recommended to pour the new oil in the valley before installing the intake manifold. Not sure if that is important since the motor wont be started in the near future.

I think previous owner spliced in wires to extend to distributor. If you open the PDF file above it shows color code from distributer to MSD box. I would splice in correct color codes from box and do it right.

Gswest236

I wonder if I can get the correct wires with the correct connector. I'll have to check the MSD website. I'll unwrap the wires and see what's been changed and maybe why.

Scott, I don't know if this newer harness on Ebay will fit yours, but you can put your serial # in and see what comes up. I would cut the existing wires and use same gauge and color wire. There are connectors that have solder and heat shrink built in.
