Metric oil filter base and pressure valve positioning

Had a problem recently with no oil pressure when I stopped for lunch.  Flat bedded it home and checked for oil in the sump, (yes) tested the gauge, it works so felt it could be the oil pressure relief valve.  Removed the cover and the spring but the valve would not come out so removed the Metric base from the front cover  The valve did appear to have some crud on it and it would not slide in and out very easily.  Did a light hone of the chamber and polished the valve before re-inserting it but realized the valve has a hole through it and am wondering how it should be re-inserted.  Hole up and down or across or does it matter?

Hi Richard!  Been quite awhile.

I do not recall mine having a hole.  I think it was a solid cylinder. Mine's a 215 with the D&D metric swivel filter assembly.

I will go check my Rover 3.9.

The one in my 3.9 looks just like this cylindrical one.  The spring goes into it a good bit.
