My version of electric steering. not as polished as some of the others, but very easily accomplished.

Probably because they are too large.  There are a number of free online sites to bring them down to a manageable size.  Drop the width to 600 pixels.

Do post details, I'm still playing with my conversion.

Carl was going to reconfigure the photos so they could be up loaded.
I mounted the the unit in the engine compartment. I used a 1/2 drive universal joint to couple the the unit to the steering column. I shaped the male end of the universal to fit into the column and used the original clamp to secure the joint. I shortened the input shaft of the unit and machined it square to fit into the female end of the universal joint. A standard universal joint connected the output to the intermediate shaft. A couple of angle brackets hold the unit in place.
All in all pretty simple conversion.

Ken mounted his in the engine bay as well.

I would need to relocate my battery to the trunk.

I may explore this option.

Thanks for the pics!

What car is the steering unit sourced from?

oldguy

the power unit is from a Saturn Vue, it is also used in some gm vehicles.
there are several companies that sell the control unit so that an ecu isn't needed
a pot is incorporated to control the amount of assist
it's worked out pretty well, I would like more centering of the wheel, but that was an issue without the power assist.
I plan on adding more castor for better feed back

I've found that in limp mode the EPS units tend to give about 50% assist which is just about right. They do have a short delay while they are looking for an outside computer so initialization takes up to as much as 3 seconds in some cases. But no real need for any external controls.
