Jim Blackwood made his appearance as a "FNG" on the H.A.M.B., a forum for traditional pre-1964 hot rods.  It's a site probably the opposite of this one, getting roasted as a noob is to be expected as is posting off topic. Combine the two and someone is going to get torched.  Jim's innocent question was:

"Anyone know where to get the vent filter that goes inside the left snorkel of a Buick Star Wars air filter housing? It is for the PCV vent line?"

The responses were memorable:  http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=652437

Whoa.

Entertaining to say the least!

Man, I've seen threads get away before, but that was rediculous!

That's a hard group over there. Not one of them even tried to address his question, not much help for a newbie. Personally I found it sort of nasty and won't visit that site again and consider the people there just to be a bunch of smart a**ed SOBs.  I much prefer the kinder gentler approach most of us here on this forum seem to  have towards such questions and also on the other boards I frequent.

I've seen that behavior before on a few other threads---what you have is a bunch of guys who know a little bit about a particular subject, but are totally ignorant about the world around them--it's a pack mentality developed by guys who have an accumulative maturity level of a junior in high school--

Apparently they know a lot about Star Wars though....

I suggested to Jim that he make a new request about something else and reference Indiana Jones.  Then another on Back to the Future, etc.....

And someone called me on stirring the pot Dan :).

Hey, thats why they call it the hokey ass message board!
Seriously I'm with Bill on that one , nobody even tried to address his question.

It's OK though, to be fair about it I've been having just as much fun with it as they were. And I'm not quite the noob they think, as I have been on there off and on over the last couple years with a different log-in, I just couldn't get it to work and re-registered. As for getting the question answered, I didn't expect a lot, and then once the fun started it was pretty clear that wasn't the place for any kind of serious discussion. I got what I needed at V8Buick, with no fanfare.

It was all right much of a riot really. Five pages! Can you imagine? Maybe I should have known... but, what the heck, I think it was all in fun. I know I got quite a few laughs out of it.

I do think you should ask them about the flux capacitor though. ; )

It went to eight pages before it closed.  This was the coolest post: http://www.xtranormal.com/watch/12824338/hamber-drama

There were a couple of follow up threads before I got banned for all of eternity. :-)

About 350 different threads got discussed H.A.M.B. today.  Way too much for ANYONE to read.   Evidently, lots of threads get closed by the moderator, and lots of people get banned.

The BritishV8 forum software (a.k.a. "Phorum") doesn't even have a "close thread" feature.

I don't think it needs it either. This is a much friendlier forum.

Thanks Calvin for the photo.  I just had to see the thing that evoked such a lousy response.  Boorish behaviour on the internet is quite prevalent now.  I am a bit of a news hound and I read lots of comments posted on these commentarys/articles and you get some real rude people attacking each other.  If you want to see the absolute worst behaviour just look at the comments posted below music you-tube videos.  This type of behaviour would rarely happen in the real world but it happens on the internet because you can be the biggest a$$-hole and get away with it.
I tip my hat to you Jim as your knowledge of BOPR drive trains is probably more than the collective knowledge of all those guys on that forum.

Cheers

That business with the HAMB really didn't go that well. Although I didn't actually get banned, I got points, had two threads closed and a third removed so I think it's fair to say that at the end nobody was happy with the way things had turned out. But it would be unfair of me to try and make it out as all being their fault. I saw their hazing tactics and was determined not to be a victim. As a result their fun-n-games turned to anger and dislike and I really can't blame them for that. After all, it is their forum and they don't know me from Adam. Plus there is the undeniable fact that my generation as a rule was rebellious and resentful of their elders and I'm sure that hasn't been forgotten.  But that wasn't how I wanted things to go. It just goes to show you that it's usually better to swim with the current than against it. I thought I was doing that, at least to begin with but I think I started to react instead of thinking carefully about what I was doing.

At any rate there is nothing to be gained by railing against them. Also considering that quite a few of our members here like the old Rods and feel a kinship with their members or are members over there it makes more sense to mend fences.

Of course I'm not saying that hazing is acceptable behavior, whether it's over there or elsewhere, just that I'll try not to get into arguments with them in the future. After all, you really can't win against someone who can always have the last word.

Good grief what a flame job, there are quite the bunch of comedians over there! I do lurk around there and have posted a few responses but the know it alls out weigh the serious builder/ seasoned mechanic. For instance they have a thread for step vans, so I figured I'd ask about a converted bookmobile to find out what engine was in it, 1974 International powered Gerstenslager  etc, I got 2 responses and the thread vanished, later finding out it is a V-549 IHC from an International dealer that is restoring a COE.

The volume on the site just proves there are alot of folks on there who have nothing better to do, the main reason I enjoy coming on here and MGE with a bunch of great down to earth people.

While we are on the subject Art wen you told Jon Ellison to spew somewhere else I spewed Dr. Pepper all over my monitor!!

Good times!
Thanks to all of you for your guidance, patience and inspiration!
