Does anyone make fiberglass doors for the Sprite or Midget? I have found front ends and trunks but no doors yet. Thanks

Bill Young

Jason, none that I've ever seen. From the cars that I've seen at the races and here in the photo section most use the original doors with the window mechanisms removed. If you really want to lose some weight from there you'd have to remove the door beams on the later cars and you could drill holes in the inner frame. The outer skin is pretty simple to form, you should be able to reskin it in aluminum if you delete the door handles and use in inside latch like the bugeye did.

Will a early roadster door fit the later convertible bodies?

aka can I put windowless doors on a window style body?

Bill Young

The doors should bolt on, but the sheet metal won't line up along the upper section because the shape of the bodies was quite different in that area. The rear latch mechanism was different as well so you'd either have to update the latch in the door or on the B pillar to match.
If you don't want the roll up windows then you can remove them and all the inner hardware and make an inner door pocket similar to the MKI and MKII Sprites but you still have the  vent windows to deal with . Of course you could remove those as well, but you'd have to make up custom side curtains if you want to have any protection from the rain.

The windscreen is different too with a more curved shape and the ends of the frame are matched to the door window quarterlight frames.

Rod at Spridgetech asked me about doing fiberglass doors , but the availability of doors(plentiful)
and the weight savings (none on a MK 1, little on a MK11 once you take the innards out) versus the cost
just doesn't seem worth the effort, imho.
