What do you guys think about using a carb hat? Like this one used by Jeb Blanchard. I have hood clearance issues and I'd like to avoid a hood scoop on my 302 TR6.

Thanks,

George

George,

The problem is that if you do not have room say for a 14" x 2" with a drop base of 1 1/2" then you more than likely won't have room for a carb hat which in the centre will be approx 1 1/2" higher than the drop base filter.

If anyone makes a carb hat with a drop base and is no larger than 6" diameter  then I would like to know as that would fit under my MGRV8 bonnet/hood otherwise it's a make it yourself situation.

Thanks Kevin. I realize it will still stick up but I thought it might allow me to get away with a small diameter closed bubble - like on a TR4 - rather than a big open scoop.

Here's my solution in an MGB with a Rover 3.5. The aluminum can contains a Wix industrial air filter and draws cool air from in front of the radiator panel.

I've never had any particular problems with this carb hat / remote filter / cowl induction arrangement:

Possibly a more streamlined path into the carb throat (and/or a bigger diameter for more plenum volume) would help it perform even better.

George,

After investigating all options, the set up for my car was the only one that worked given hood clearances and working space.  The design works just fine...

Good luck on your project!

It's hard to beat stock air cleaners, hood clearance wise.  I modified a Yugo unit to fit the top of a Weber DGV and with some scrap tubes, made this cowl induction set-up.  Since paper filters are  kind of hard to find,I splurged on a K-N.

To avoid dropping my oil pan below the front cross member my engine is mounted a little high. I think I'll just bite the bullet and put in a hood scoop.

Before you go cutting your hood check out Spectre Performance. They have all kinds of different low profile carb hats and plenums. The website has some expensive prices, but if you figure out what will fit try searching for it on Ebay.

Here's what I'm planning on running from Spectre.
