Title: L.E.D. Tail lights for MG and other cars
Post by: BMC on July 21, 2009, 03:57:30 PM
I have read quite a number of articles online, in local newsletters and so  on about safety and how to be seen over the last several years. Over the last 12 months, I have worked with various bulb types to improve the tail lamps and interior of our cars. With all that I have gone through, the one tail light that stood far above the rest was manufactured specifically for the MGB and Midget with other types for MGA, Bugeye, Morgan, XK120, Mini MKII and MKIII and other cars becoming available. We have now placed these in our web store and speak of them for a bit on youtube.

Here is the link to the youtube video:

We post a new video here that is actually quite interesting. An actual side by side test of all the lights- night and Day. Literally and figuratively.

Brian,

Can you get L.E.D's for a TR6?

Wow, what an improvement Brian. Great stuff. I'll have to start saving my lunch money I guess. What's the story on flashers with these? Can you use your existing unit or do you need one specifically designed for use with the LED lamps? How about the hazard flasher for those guys who have that as well?

Calvin,  YES! Not list out yet but they are available. Email me for more information and pricing.

There are several types we now offer. Not all are post online. I am working on that.

Bill, Change your flasher out to an electronic flasher. You probably already have on your tow vehicle. Electronic flashers will not flash too fast or too slow if they have too few or too many lights working off them. I would think that most modern cars now operate with these whereas the MG still uses that bimetallic strip that opens and closes as it heats up. Easy. For my car, I should only need the electronic on the turn flasher but the front bulbs were not flashing with the four way hazard due to some other issues.

Do you sell a conversion for the MG Magnette tail lights and indicators?

Hi Ian,

There are none available as of yet. The aim is towards the more common lights first. We are currently Restoring a Magnette Varitone and from what I see, the tail lamps look similar to some of the MGA front lamps. The location on the Magnette rear makes having bright rear lights more needed.

Hi Brian,

I think you're correct about the MGA lamps being basically the same and just how poor those original units are. I have also managed to get hold of a pair of indicators (turn signals) in yellow for the rear that match the lens of the tail light unit so it would be great to convert them as well.

I came to the conclusion that the chances of anyone noticing the semaphores as the sole method of indicationg turns was probably a little optomistic with a car that looks like mine.

If you could contact me if you do start selling the conversion that would be great.

      Many thanks

Digging up this old thread for a good reason...

Yes, we now carry TR6 tail lamps.

Yes, we now carry Magnette rear.

Yes we carry plenty more than we did when this was first post!

I did install the Led brake lights for my 6, and they are alot brighter along with new wiring for the whole car.

Very easy to install and can put back to original.

Brian, have you given any thought to doing front turn signal lamps? The OEM ones really aren't much to get excited about.

I need help finding a third brake light with turn signals to be mounted behind the passenger compartment.  Third lights are easy to find, just not with turn signals.  The turn signals on my MGA are LED but are mounted very low to the ground.  While bright, I've had people who have come close to rear ending me because they didn't see the lights.  Also, does anyone know a source for LED lights that will fit standard MGA tail lenses?
