Post by: Solarman on December 18, 2007, 07:50:06 PM
I have a Ford 8" and it has 3.4:1 ratio how will this compare to the MGB 3.9:1. Shoul I change this? what are the pros and cons?

I think you might find Dan Masters' nifty calculator very helpful - this link will open as an Excel spreadsheet.

If you enter gear ratios, tire diameter, etc., the calculator correlate engine speed (shift points) to road speed for you.

Curtis,
That is a great spread sheet.  I am going to try a 3.0 ratio.  It will put RPM at about 2200 at 80.  Just where I think it should be.
Will have to run again at MAxton and see if I'm faster that was y.  Now I am at 110 at 5700 in third gear. ( 4 speed Auto.)
The new gear will put me down under 4000 at the same speed.

That's a hot car, man! I love the custom headlight setup. What engine are you running now? If it's a transplant with more power I think you'll like the Ford ratio better. With more torque you won't need the extra gear and you can lower your crusing RPMs.
