Title: Making your own frame?
Post by: Low_n_slow on May 09, 2026, 09:41:56 PM
Given the spaghetti like quality of the TR6 frame, if you are upgrading the engine, rear end, and front suspension, would it just be easier to weld-up a frame of 2X3 tubing?

I'm torn between a 2JZ, which I have and an LS 5.3 which I would need to acquire.

I'm a decent welder and have to tools and space to put it together.

I know that Ratco is an option. Just curious to other ideas.

It's been done before. Unless you have engineering skills it's pretty well guaranteed it'll be heavier, maybe a lot heavier and you might miss some important things but certainly it can be done. Biggest mistake will probably be using tubing that is overly thick for the job. But hey, I have a friend who once built a Jeep frame out of structural channel iron and it worked just fine. Wasn't light though.
