Title: 1995 Six speed trans. from V8 Camaro
Post by: Doc Hopalongfoot on February 24, 2009, 10:49:32 PM
Just saw some ads for 1995 LT1 Camaros with 6 sp. trans.  Will these transmissions fit in a B?

Doc, I don't think it will fit without a lot of metal work on the tunnel. The T56 is quite a bit larger than the T5. Calvin Grannis is using one in his conversion and there are some photos in his postings on the Triumph section.

Some guys say yes, some say no. A lot depends on how far forward your engine is.

Here is a couple of photos of a T5 and T56 for comparison. The scale isn't quite exact, but pretty close, enough to see the major areas of difference. The rear section is quite a bit larger on the T56 and the shifter is seveal inches rearwards of the T5 location.

Thanks Bill, I didn't know that there was such a huge difference in size between them.

The T56 is a biggun.
For sure. Wide too. Which is more concerning...

That said, Calvin has found a place that moves the shifter to the front cover - or forward quite a ways. Check out his build diary in the Rumf forum.

Adds about 50 lbs, as well.

I would question why someone would want to put that many gears in a light vehicle. For a 2500lb vehicle like an MGB, 5 forward speeds is more than enough.

I would love a 6 speed in my car but honestly, it makes no sense. It costs more which is not needed and it is just not needed. It makes far more sense to change your rear axle and suspension. You can accelerate faster and better this way.

Yeah, that's what they said about motorcycles too. How many gears are they up to on those now? Some rice burners even came with a digital readout to tell you what gear you were in. Maybe if we had a motorcycle style shifter it would make more sense though. And at least the weight is in the middle of the car, plus it's stout enough we'll never break one.

But I'm a little tired of all that rowing around town, and the clutch is worse. Hopefully when I get done with my automatic upgrade though I'll have something you guys will approve of. If it works out the way I want it to.

Top two gears in the T56 are over drives, does your car run
high speed alot for the need? .63 gear in a T5 drops enough
rpm for most people for highway cruising.
