Title: Spitfire V6 Swap
Post by: mrmom9822443@gmail.com on May 25, 2020, 08:09:05 AM
I have a 76 Spitfire with Chevy 60 degree v6 and Thunderbird IRS to handle the power. I did not narrow the IRS so I'm a bit wide in the rear. It drives fine but I am now needing to tackle the narrow front. Any ideas on adding about 3" to each side? I'm OK fabricating to a certain degree but major frame replacement exceeds my limit. Was thinking about new spindles to convert to ford 5lug disc brakes and making new adjustable control arms that mount to the existing mounting points. Would plan on new adjustable coilovers. I also need to figure out the steering rod ends or rack replacement. Thought about Mustang II spindles but it might screw up the design too much.
Another thought would be to use Mustang II spindles and arms and change frame mounting points to maintain original design.
Any suggestions on sourcing spindles that would be a closer match to original Spitfire design?

Thanks for any help, Dan

There are many complete front suspensions available in the hot rod world that are complete weld in assemblies based on the Mustang II. This is just one but there are many more if you Google Mustang II front suspension kits.

Thanks Jim,

I am thinking more that I am going to use Mustang II spindles and control arms. I will have to figure out fabricating mounting points to frame and which way to go with the steering rack.

(same Jim Stabe of Peterson's Complete Guide to Engine Swapping? and MG Exp. swap? - nice work.)

I think my British car swapping addiction might be your fault - with appreciation.
