Title: Stag Rover Engine Swap: shop referral.
Post by: Cambridge5555 on October 28, 2019, 06:17:17 PM
Hello, new member from Southern California.

I'm looking to place a Rover V8 in my Stag, looking for a good shop in Southern California that has done a few. I'm willing to ship car as required.

Thanks

I'm not in SoCal, so no help with referrals.

It has been done many times over the years. No trailblazing, required.  Not sure what Triumph was thinking, when they had the Rover V8 at their disposal.  If you were closer, I would help you swap it out.

Thank you Carl. I have seen photos of engine swaps on this site and most or all look very well sorted. I can have the car shipped anywhere so would like the best possible shop. Also will need help getting engine and tranny including a rebuild. I heard about a shop in Texas but unable to locate.

Charles - RE shop in TX... are you thinking of 5R restoration?

Thanks Rob
Contacted 5R Restoration and they mostly do MGs. They have not done a Stag and are very busy. I'm still looking, thanks.

Are certain years Rover V8 better then others. I meet someone who has one to give to me for free.
I'm clueless about them. Would like to put it in my TVR if its correct

We would have to write you a book to answer that question, Rob.

Some prefer certain years, some certain engine sizes.  Some say that all but the 3.5 can slip a cylinder liner.  The 3.5 can, as well.  Some will tell you the Rover V8 is a flawed version of the Buick 215. The only ones that can't slip a liner is the Buick & Olds 215 (3.5), because it is cast into the block.

Jim Blackwood would tell you to skip it & build a Buick 300.  He makes a great case for doing so.

The 300 would do quite well in that Stag. You can even Cerakote the block to make it look like aluminum.
