Title: Got my Ls1/T56 Gt6 running
Post by: cooks 7 on December 20, 2008, 01:41:19 PM
Finally got everything setup/rigged enought to start my Ls1 in my 1969 Gt6.
You can see videos on youtube here:

and
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hrlXx2uwLqc
The videos aren't terribly exciting but I am exstatic to have it running.  The only thing I haven't hooked up is the alternator, I couldn't get my balancer pulley off until yesterday to replace it, so that's the order of the day today!  Enjoy and if you have any questions just ask or you can see more info and pictures at my website Ls1Gt6.com
Thanks
Jon

Sounds real good Jon, congrats on the start up.

That header looks good, and all looks clean.

Can't wait for you to get it on the road. You are going to have a hand full of fun with a light setup.

Keep us updated,

Calvin

I have a GT6 1970 with the original straight 6. I want to change it to an autoamtic v6 or v8. How hard was it to you engine in the gt6? Looking for any help and and advice I can get.

You fit that thing in a GT6?
Wow.

Forget any questions about weight distribution, chassis strength, other components, any of that.

You ~fit~ that thing in a GT6.
Wow.

That's just flat out inspiring. Good effort.
Now can I have a go in it?

Wow, very impressive!  I understand your excitement I remember the first time I started my project.  What HP variant is your LS1?  Keep us posted.

Thanks for the congrats from everybody.  I got the new balancer on and my alternator all hooked up so I am going to make some extended run sessions to test everything out.  Once everything is good to go I am going to pull everything out and clean up and paint the underhood chassis area/firewall ext.  It's going to be a pain but well worth the effort.  For all the time I have in the car it might as well look as nice as it hopefully performs.

Ryan, my Ls1 is out of a 2001 Trans am, so I think is was rated 315hp factory.  I am not sure what I am at now with headers, no cats, intake, no emissions stuff, etc.  Once everything is done I am going to have it dyno tuned and weighed hopefully to see where I am at power wise and weight distribution wise.

I just need brake lines and some tin work adn I'll be able to hit the road for some real testing.  Once it warms up outside that is.
Thanks again, and I'll try to do a better job of  keeping in touch on the forum.

Jon,

Did you send out your computer to delete all the smog out(rear 02 sensors, vatts, etc.) or do you have the software(HP tuners, Ls1edit)?

Also did you re-pin the computer?

When I bought the engine/transmission from ebay it came with a basic reprogram, so yeah, all smog stuff, vats, rear O2 deleted.  I haven't repinned the computer, I did have to repin a couple things, it doesn't take much to get the engine running a couple pink wires, a couple orange wires, have I had to tap into a couple wires, like the tach and have yet to find my vss for my speedo, other than that I added a coolant sensor on the pass. side.  and the 01's didn't need an oil pressure input for the computer so I eliminated that and added an autometer gauge and sending unit in its place.
Let me know if you have any questions when you get to that point.
Can't wait to get it on the road.

that's sick. There's a GT6 sitting in front of a shop I pass every day. People tell me it's been there for years.

One of the heaviest parts of the car is me, unfortunately, I am 5'11'' and about 205.  It's a tight fit but surprisingly comfortable.
In other news I figured out why the engine was cranking for so long before firing and got that fixed, the idle air control valve is apparently a "learning" setup, so me unplugging the battery all the time for wiring makes it go crazy, I unplugged the IAC on the throttle body and now the engine fires up so fast you have to let loose of the key as quick as possible.  I am happy to have figured that out, one of the main reasons I wanted fuel injection was for quick and easy startup so the long cranking was driving me nuts.
I am also about 90% done with wiring which is awesome, the dash is coming together nicely too, so I'll post pictures when it's complete, hopefully in a couple days.
