Title: Rear Main Cap sealing.
Post by: NixVegaGT on December 15, 2008, 12:31:36 PM
Sealing the crossed slots in the rear main bearing cap on the late block. Do I just use high temp RTV there??

I'd use "Right Stuff" Nick. It isn't like it's got to come back apart anytime soon.

I think this might be what was in there before. It was black... Hmmm. This is what I have:

I buy the 2 pack with the caulking gun. About $20 and lasts a long time. Don't mess with the aerosol, it's got bubbles and the nozzle clogs and is hard to clean out. With the caulking gun you just squeeze out a nib before you put it away, pull that out next time and go. (unless you store it for months) I just flat guarantee you it'll out perform any rtv you can get your hands on. Doesn't mind oil either. No way you'd get me to use rtv inside an engine.

I like "Right Stuff" in the caulking gun too. Seems to work very well. (I used it when I tore this stuff apart to change a rear main seal.) It's much easier to use than toothpaste-style tubes.

Forgive me if I have missed something .. but why do you not just use the crucifix seals that LandRover supply .. I have never had a problem with them sealing?

Sounds like a good suggestion Shaun, I for one have never seen those, having only dealt with Buick and Olds blocks. Apparently that is yet another difference. Nick's engine is something of a hybrid I believe, with Buick heads and crank and a sleeved Rover block. I'd guess he has it together by now, and if he used the sealant we recommended he'll have no problems. But if not, it sounds like those seals would be a good idea.

In case you still need some ... the LandRover part number is LUN000010 ...

Hello, first post...
I have a leak coming from the rear bearing block. I believe the cause is the crucifix seals.
The engine is in the vehicle and is running great. I'd rather not pull the engine to fix this small issue.
My question is, can I remove the rear bearing block and replace the two crucifix seals without disturbing the rear main seal nor the bearings?
This is for a Rover EFI 3.9L V8

Cheers...
