As noted I am trying to set my preload on my 4.0. My initial measurement of #1 cyl. using the wire feeler gauge method was bigger than the wire measuring tools I have.
So I created an aluminum shim measuring .036 and installed 4 on the odd bank.
Here are my numbers
All numbers w/o the 0 in the front
52/52 37/32 32/3/ 35/23
Then installed those shims on the even side
55/52 18/42 52/56 32/46
Using brand new dry lifters and brand new push rods (Smith Bros) The rocker assembly is stock from an 80 TR8.
What could cause such radical numbers.
Was told to add up the banks to get an average on each side and then figure what I would need to equal about .034 (Number differed by everyone)
Would appreciate the feedback as I am a duface when it comes to all things valve train
I'd go for the .040-.080" range myself. Less chance of lifter tap.

So maybe go higher average than the 34
I normally shoot for .060"

Swapped the rocker assemblies and this is what i got.

Who did your heads? A properly set up head should have all valve heights the same should it not? So in theory the clearances should also be the same unless the rocker arms are worn in varying arrays.
That what perplexes me
The heads were done by Woody and have about 600 miles on them over 4 years.
The rockers are stock TR8 ones with 100K about on them
New lifters and push rods.
The cam is the same age as the heads and the block is brand new

Huston, I think we have a problem.
I need you fine experts to let me know if I do.
I was told that I should use a straight edge to measure across my valves and springs to make sure they are level.
So Since I am working the even side of the engine I pulled the rockers< again, and layed my framing square across the top.
Yikes.
The exhaust valve (I think), is a lot higher than the rest.
With the edge on# 8-4 I have .016 on the outside valve on 2
When I reverse the edge and lay it on 2 & 4 I have like .04 on the outside valve on 8.
What says you all??
