Title: MGB headrest speakers
Post by: b6281t on March 08, 2015, 12:19:24 PM
I liked the idea of built in speakers in the Miata and Fiero seat swaps. But having a limited budget and wanting to keep a more stock look I came up with this.

Starting with a set of headrest in such bad shape I couldn't tell they were supposed to have a wood strip along the bottom to staple the ulpolstery onto. I ended up using sheet metal screws to attach the cover.

I fabricated sheet metal boxes to house the speakers.

I split the foam cover lenthwise and opened up the cavities to fit the new speakers and used contact cement to reassemble the two halves.

So very, very cool!

Does the third photo show that you tried two different kinds of speakers, or does it show the front and back views side-by-side?

Thanks, its front and back views. I wired the drivers side as the front speakers and pass. side as rear speakers so the volume can be adjusted from side to side.

Nice job!  Did you vent the rear of the headrest to allow the speakers to breathe?

Thanks for the feedback Rick I'm always open to learning something new. I made the speaker headrest 9 years ago and I'm no audiophile but they do sound fine to me.

I was talking with Kelvin Dodd (Moss Motors) at the BMTA conference last weekend.

I think he's going to be doing a conversion similar to yours for his MGB.
