Title: Epoxy resin to bond fiberglass mat for fender flare strength
Post by: Brownwood on September 10, 2014, 11:14:00 AM
I have my Huffaker fender flares bonded to the car and it has been curing for a week.  Time to think about reinforcing mat on the inside of the wheel wells.  I have the mat but need to purchase epoxy resin to bond the mat to the flares and the inner fender wells.  I'm looking for suggestions on what brand to use?  Also, is a quart enough to do this job on all 4 wheel wells?

I don't have any advice - but if there is someone that does its Dave Craddock, amazing composite work and a wealth of knowledge.

Thanks Robert.  A lot of my car came from Dave and I couldn't have gotten this far without his advice!  Don't know why I didn't think of that.  Ill email him for sure.

Keith, the last couple of quarts of resin I used was from Lowe's about three years ago.  I don't own the car anymore but it's still running around North Texas happy as a cat and still holding up.  I'm not so sure a single quart would be enough for all four corners, but it's not all that expensive.  I'm sure Dave, who knows more than I do, or others can recommend or not-recommend this approach but it's an idea.

OK, I ended up ordering West Systems epoxy resin.  It seemed to be the best at boding to metal, based on my research.  I used West Systems adhesive to attach my flares so thought that would be a good way to go.  Man, it's expensive at 50 bucks a quart, including the hardener, but I wanted the best.  I ordered 2 quarts.
