so a friend and i are discussing the diff between a 3.0 v6 and a 3.0 v8. we are under the impression that all 6 cylinders put to gather will make 3.0 liters and on the v8 all 8 cylinders put to gather will make 3.0 liters this correct right? so if that is right then witch is more power full assuming both have the same stroke length?

All things being fairly equal, generally speaking the engine fewer cylinders will produce more torque (at a lower RPM). While the engine with more cylinders will produce more peak horse power (at a higher RPM).
A comon expample of this would be street bike or snowmobile engines. Where Japanese engine manufactures will build a 4 cylinder engine the same displacement as a big twin in order to achieve more peak horse power (more cylinders and valves to get air/fuel in/out of the engine equals more peak HP).

With the stroke held the same, the V8 would have smaller bores to achieve the same 3.0 liter displacement. The smaller bore restricts valve size and flow, which would limit HP. The more usual way to do it would be to use a smaller stroke with more cylinders, allowing higher RPMs and reducing reciprocating mass.
