Title: Car Music - What's Your Favorite?
Post by: Scott Costanzo on June 02, 2014, 07:51:57 PM
I was working on my car about 5:30 AM on Sunday listening to some music when Deep Purple's Highway Star came on....really enjoyed it. It reminded me of my youth! :) Looked up the lyrics....here's a quote:

QuoteI love it, I need it, I seed it
Eight cylinders all mine
Alright hold tight I'm a highway star

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_WFLUhSym80&feature=youtube_gdata_player

Gets the blood moving! Anyone else have a favorite car song they want to share?

"My MGB GT she's a Runner Now" By Richard Thompson (Mirror Blue" album)

Lyrics to Mgb-gt
Oh I've got a little car and she might go far
She's the mistress of my heart now
She's a '65 with an overdrive
And I fixed her in every part now
Two in the front and two in the back
110 on the old Hog's Back
My MGB-GT, she's a runner now
MGB-GT
Oh my MGB-GT, she's a runner now

Oh I welded the sills and the old floor pan
Cut the rust with the torch and the hacksaw
Took the Rostyles off, put the spoked wheels on
Got a brand new Salisbury axle
When I come to town the girls all smile
They say "Here's the man with the retro style"
My MGB-GT, she's a runner now
MGB-GT
Oh my MGB-GT, she's a runner now

Lockheed discs and twin SUs
Original chrome on the grille now
She looks like a dream in her racing green
Competition's standing still now
I sprayed up her body, I strenghtened the frame
I stripped her right down and I built her up again

Now an Alpine's fine if you've got the time
And a Healey'll set you back some
And a TR4 costs a little bit more
But it don't have the same attraction
Hard top handy, in case of the weather
I don't care if it rains forever
In my MGB-GT, she's a runner now
MGB-GT
In my MGB-GT, she's a runner now
MGB-GT
In my MGB-GT, she's a runner now

There are lots of great car songs. Some will get you a speeding ticket if you get lost in the music.  :)

Here's a bit obscure one that some of y'all may not be familiar with.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hgee3FNiZY4

Queen - I'm in Love With My Car

The machine of a dream, such a clean machine
With the pistons a pumpin', and the hubcaps all gleam
When I'm holding your wheel
All I hear is your gear
With my hand on your grease gun
Mm it's like a disease son
I'm in love with my car, gotta feel for my automobile
Get a grip on my boy racer rollbar
Such a thrill when your radials squeal

Told my girl I'll have to forget her
Rather buy me a new carburettor
So she made tracks saying this is the end now
Cars don't talk back they're just four wheeled friends now

When I'm holding your wheel
All I hear is your gear
When I'm cruisin' in overdrive
Don't have to listen to no run of the mill talk jive

I'm in love with my car (love with my car), gotta feel for my automobile
I'm in love with my car (love with my car), string back gloves in my automolove

Geesh!  The newest song mentioned so far (Richard Thompson's "MGB GT") is already twenty years old. The average song here must be ~20 years older than that. Please allow me to turn you on to a fantastic car song from THIS century. This song answers the question:  "Where will Curtis' next car come from?"

<iframe src="//player.vimeo.com/video/2406445?title=0&amp;byline=0&amp;portrait=0" width="600" height="452" frameborder="0" webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen allowfullscreen></iframe>
(The cool guitar stuff starts at about 3:12 and builds...)

QuotePlease allow me to turn you on to a fantastic song/band from THIS century.

That's even better than Lawrence Welk. Just.

Some of mine:

Rip it up - Little Richard
Great Balls of Fire - Jerry Lee Lewis
Maybelline - Chuck Berry
Don't let Go - Roy Hamilton
Hound Dog - Big Mama Thorten

And from a later era:
Jazz Samba - Stan Getz & Charlie Bird
Tideline - Daryl Anger & Barbara Higby

I could go on, but I have to include a favorite road tune from an earlier era: Beethoven's Ninth - I would lose my license if I listened to that very often. When the chorus hits their stride, I usually have the pedal to the metal.

Carl,

I've got that album! Probably haven't listened to it in over 20 yrs. Forgot how good it is.

Since Hendrix was such an influence on Trower, how about this one?

Dan M.,

Great tunes! I took the liberty of putting links to the songs here. Hope you don't mind?

I especially liked Don't let Go and Hound Dog. Elvis' Hound Dog sort of missed the point, didn't it? That song was meant to be sung by a woman.

I figure there are subclasses of "car music": (a) songs that remind you of your car, (b) songs for working on your car, (c) songs for cruising, (d) songs for long road trips, etc.  - Driving clear across the country for BritishV8 2009, I played <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R-IulQvbIcU">"Return of the Grievous Angel"</a>, <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3awYKbiTLso">"Six Days on the Road"</a> and <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xrCMlSWlDX8&amp;fmt=18">"Willin'</a> over and over and over. Definitely three favorite road songs!

---

Now... here's a relatively recent song by a talented young lady you've probably never heard of, but with car references and raw feminine sexual energy:  ZZ Ward performing <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLqQEy84qow">"Move Like You Stole It"</a>.  And another favorite along somewhat similar lines: Chrissie Hynde and Co (aka The Pretenders) performing <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxY6YitjNM0">"Night in My Veins"</a>.

This quote from Phil reminded me of driving the Roadmaster on I-77 from VA to WVA.  It sounded so good I looped around and went through the tunnel two more times.

This is a great thread. Some very fine music indeed!

---

Old timers may know this next suggestion as a Bo Diddley song, but I prefer Lonesome George's version:
<object width="600" height="450"><param name="movie" value="//www.youtube.com/v/NRocHd0f2Kc?version=3&amp;hl=en_US&amp;rel=0"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="//www.youtube.com/v/NRocHd0f2Kc?version=3&amp;hl=en_US&amp;rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="600" height="450" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

The video reminded me of my first rock concert: George Thorogood and the Delaware Destroyers at the old Warner Theater in downtown DC. (Such a great venue!) It was Thanksgiving weekend, and The Destroyers were on their epic and now legendary "Fifty states in fifty days" tour. Obviously, DC isn't a state - earlier that same day they had played Baltimore, and then they played DC, starting real late and playing loud and strong right through the wee hours of the morning. (More about it <a href="http://www.nosuchthingaswas.com/2011/08/5050.html">here</a>.)

It's my life's theme song!
Been in that court room many times.

"Born to be wild" is actually a biker song but comes in at a virtual tie.

Add "Helen Wheels" by the Beetles, bonus points if you know what kind of car she is.
You DID know it's about a car, right?

"Helen Wheels" is about a classic  Land-Rover, and I still have mine.

"Satisfaction" (I can't get no) also makes a great driving song.
