I got the car off of ebay with a SBC and TH-400 in the car... An absolute blast to drive, handles like a dream and drives my z06 under the table as long as your careful with it... The car weighs 1456 lbs, iron headed 283 bored .50 over to make it a 290. I believe someone posted about this car earlier when it was for sale on ebay. Anyways, after driving the piss out of the car, I wanted to update it and as someone else said, do something for the aesthetics of the car. Here goes nothing...
In goes a built LS6 from a Z06 corvette, backed by a 200-4r transmission for the overdrive gearing. I drove all the way from Memphis to Omaha, Nebraska to pick up one of the few remaining Thomas Denner hoods and it's getting fixed and re-gelcoated as we speak. Engine will fit under the bonnet, side pipes are gone, exhaust will be under the car. Car will be red with new black interior, you'll like the console and shifter I promise. Engine controlled by FAST XFI, Touch screen will be installed also in the console to monitor engine, etc... I had it lying around from a previous project. I'll update as best I can but a lot done for now.

also, brakes will be wildwood fronts with the big drums remaining in the back, master cylinder will probably get dropped down some into the driver footwell, but there is tons of room and it will be up high where it won't be noticed.
So, here you are out in the backyard, casually undertaking a project that most people would need a fully equipped workshop and many months to get done. Respect.... and with a glamorous supervisor...
In its eBay listing, the car looked like a candidate for the uglybug ball, but in your pics it looks, or that should be looked, a lot better. Do agree though that the scoop and sidepipes did nothing for it.
Surprised you're using the 200R4, wouldn't have thought it would handle the torque?
And, your new front-end with no vents, you reckon the cooling will be OK... well...

This looks really interesting and that Denner bonnet is a unique piece. Have to share Ivor's concerns about the airflow, though. Should be a lot of fun. Please keep us posted.
I'm kind of partial to the 200-4r, I have one in my blown 69 Camaro and it's been a fantastic piece. Once the TV cable is adjusted properly it's good to go. I'll have my core rebuilt to hold the horsepower and the core only cost me 100 bucks locally so I can't really complain to much. I doubt the lack of hood vents will be a problem, there are no wheel wells on the car, so the sides right by where both exhausts will go down will be open to airflow minus the wheel stuff in the way. even with the iron headed SBC in the car before it always ran cool as long as I didn't forget to turn the fan switch on... This time it will be controlled via theromostat switch through the FAST setup. A lot more to follow, I'm going to get some sheet steel today to do some fab work on the gas tank, the old one was good but I want to maximize some of the space I have a little better and open up the area behind the driver a little bit better... More to follow.

Not much to report, although I got my wiring harness in today and I'm getting that all mocked up and ready to go. It should look good when it's all done. The old brake pad for the front is pictured here, wilwoods will be a lot bigger... The rear brakes are big drums from a 63 bel air car. All suspension is custom built and frame built under the car to support the horsepower.

The Camaro was my daily driver before this one, I love the car built it from a hulk to what it is now, sbc 142 blower, full suspension, etc, etc... fun car... until I drove this one, it's night and day different and 100 times more fun.
And to think the guys with the kit Cobras are always talking about high horsepower in a short wheelbase. This will show 'em!
The plans have changed for now, purely because of the amount of fab work I'll have to do to get everything to fit under the hood...I got the Thomas Denner hood back and it's a ton of fab to get everything to fit under that hood. I really don't want to cut the Thomas Denner hood since it's so rare, so I think I'm going to toss the other front end back on the car and use my old stock hood instead of the ugly other hood. Of course I'll have to cut that hood in the center but It'll have to do for now until I can come up with a game plan on the other , which will probably entail dropping the motor down about 6 inches. That will mean I will need to cut the sides by the footwells and figure out a new way to setup the steering, plus some frame modifications. The side pipes will still be gone but there will be an engine coming through the hood now... I'll post up 2 options though, I'll post up pics here soon, but it would either be an LS2 intake with rails and 90 mm TB, or a magnacharger.... I figure if it's going through the hood, might as well go full retard.
No doubt you will have some sort of bulge on the hood. I am sure that your new engine with either option has a lower profile than the Chev small block that the car came with. If you drop the engine too low then you have the constant wory of taking out your oil pan unless you go with a dry sump.
Oh the joys of stuffing a large engine in a dinky little car!!

Both stick through the hood by quite a bit due to the sloping of the hood down in the front. I figure if it's going to go through the hood, lets make it epic!!!!!!
so obviously I have to cut this down a few inches and do some trimming front and back, also the panels will go under the dash and have a hidden audio system and 2 speakers, 1 by driver and passenger leg under the dash. The console will be covered in vinyl also, and the touch screen will be molded into the existing dash in place of the existing gauges... speedo and tach will remain. let me know what you think, I wanted to make the car something completly different and as fun as possible to drive.

Maybe you could use one of Dave Craddock's bug eye hoods,
yeah, I looked at other hoods, not a big fan of the bugeye bonnets plus I don't think I'm going to be able to gett the cooling sorted out like I want with the bugeye hood... The interior wasn't bad at all with the side pipes, but now I'll have the exhaust running under the car and I'll put heat shielding and undercarpet padding down to help with that. The old front end I'll be using is a steel tilt front end, I'll just have to cut the hood.
there are some nice midget hoods available, I had thought about putting the midget hood on my bugeye for the reasons you stated about cooling, plus flairing of fenders would not look weird
I'm just kinda getting stuff together and test fitting right now. I plan on getting quite a bit done over the next few weeks to include painting the car. heres the new radiator and fans, it's a dewitts notched radiator and it's badass with huge fans... shouldn't have any issues keeping the car cool. The tranny cooler will get mounted under the oil pan with a fan on it to make room for the heat exchanger for the supercharger to go on the front of the radiator. The water tank that comes with the maggie setup wouldn't really work so I got a different tank that I'll mount in the trunk. Got to fab up an alternator bracket, with alot of help from John, it'll go on the driver side. Thinking of a couple of filter ideas, gotta get the hood on with the throttle body and just see what fits best I guess. Coil packs will get relocated under the dash.

Got the car torn down yesterday and started addressing the problem areas. Got a lot of the car blocked already, cut part of the hood but still got to add metal back in the back and cut some more off of the front. Old Austin Healey grill will be up front, but so far I love the look, it's totally a sleeper car!!!!! Got a good friend in town helping with the body work. I'll post up todays progress later on.

Yeah, I was kidding around, there's no hiding what it is now. I can't wait to get her back on the road again, should be insanely fun to drive. The side profile pic really shows how much you'd have to do to get one of these engines under the hood. Even with an ls2 intake flipped around backwards, you'd still have to drop the engine almost to the ground and shove it back into the drivers compartment to get it to fit. The oil cap even comes through the hood on the valve cover.

cut the front of the hood and moved it to fill in the space in the back behind the supercharger, also gave me room to turn the elbow down off of the throttle body... got a lot of options on the filter so we'll see what we come up with, oddly enough the car will be a daily driver so I'd prefer to not keep it up in the elements like rain, etc... already have to spin the scoop around on the Camaro when I drive it in the rain.

I would be cranking out more on the car now but we are waiting for the temp to rise a few degrees, it's 21 right now and theres frost all over the car. Around 9 we should be rocking and rolling again.
Got the body all finished up yesterday, still got to wet sand and buff, etc but I'm glad it's in clear finally... It turned out awesome and I love the color. I still have to finish the hood prep and paint it red also.

yeah, I'm going to clean it all up and brace it accordingly. We already braced the rear pretty good but I'm thinking about putting bar stock on it to give it a 90 degree edge and more of a finished look. On my Camaro I just put the door edge molding and it turned out pretty good, but I'd like to try something a little bit different on this one.

I have to say that to look "Right" with that bonnet the rear of the car would need to be restyled.
I think the rounded front and square rear would look a bit odd.
The denner bonnet is getting put in the shed waiting for a nice bugeye where I don't need to put a hole in the hood to fit an engine. It's ready to be picked up at the corvette shop... I figured corvette guys would fix it right. We'll see. The car has some drastic changes since the last time I posted, I'll crank it first(here in a few days) before I post up pics and vids.

I made some drastic changes to get the car ready for the nice weather... Bitch all you want, I kinda like it better this way, way simpler, engine is proven, and all my projects will be on the road a lot faster now that the blown ls6 will go in the vette. If I had a few parts that are in the mail, the car would be out scaring small children already. Console and gas tank will be back from upholstery beginning of next week, everything under the car is in except driveshaft, got the new yoke and it's an inch too short, new one on the way along with new throttle cable and tranny cooler. Other than that and the new speedhut gauges I'm waiting on, it's ready to go. Sounds like a lot but it's really not.

Yeah, I don't mind the blower right there, I was used to looking around it on the Camaro. I'm going to toss the old engine into the Camaro today or tomorrow and then the ls6 into the corvette. It'll get engines into projects and get them out of the way. I'm very anxious to get the little car on the road... should be any day now really. One side affect of tossing new seats in it is they have more padding and sit up a few inches higher... hopefully my head doesn't stick to the bottom side of it or through the roof.
Got the console and tank back from upholstery and I'm pretty pleased with how they turned out. At the very least It's better than looking at a nasty gas tank or a bland looking console. I put the matching emblem on the back of the tank as the front, just forgot to snap a pic. Started making panels to put the interior back together, that's what the black board in the back is., still have to make holes in it for the fuel lines and the roll bar but it's close. I also still need to make the holes for the speakers, they will go under the dash in the close out wings by the driver passenger knee area. Just 4 inch speakers, nothing crazy, and only using 2. I'll make the finishing piece that will make the dash blend better into the console, just haven't had time. Also need to fill in the square hole and make 4 holes for the new gauges. It's getting there. On a side note my transmission cooler got here from ebay today and was literally falling apart out of the box with 2 broken fan mounts on it. We'll see how the seller wants to handle it, it's just frustrating.
Oh yeah, don't worry, floors and wheel well area will be getting carpet, just haven't gotten it down yet.

sorry, I don't get on here a lot. The console has no padding in it, just vinyl over the aluminum. The only reason why is because space is at a premium in the car right now and I didn't want it to be too bulky. Its already a very tight fit. I'm very pleased with how it turned out and the video doesn't do it justice for just how mean the car sounds.

To say that this car is a handful to drive would be a gross understatement. I need sticky tires and my front brakes that I ordered awhile back to get here before I really see what the car can do. Saying all that though, it's soo much fun to drive. Basically idles at speed and obviously plenty of power. I just need to finish the front end and toss it back on but I may just put cheap turn signals and headlights on the front end and drive it as is for a little while... kinda fun that way. Forgive the videos, the first was after I buttoned up the majority of the electrical late at night and I was pretty tired. The second was the first test drive, rowing through the lenko style shifter... It achieves exactly what I wanted and makes driving the car alot more fun. The third was basically me zip tying the camera to a spot in the back of the car so you could see how the shifting works... forgive the wind noise and I still need to adjust the shifts on the TV cable a little bit but you get the idea.

The trans is built to handle over 600hp. It came out of my 69 Camaro that was procharged before this setup. The buick grand national guys have been building the 200-4r's for awhile to handle big power

No real advantages but it sure is alot of fun to drive with this type of shifter. U can also just put it in 4 and go with no shifting
The weather was nasty but we got a lot done today. New hood welded onto the fenders and most of the body work on it done as well. Hopefully I can get the rest of the body work on the hood finished tomorrow and at least get it in primer and on the car. I have good help, I can't take all of the credit.

accomplished my goal of getting primer on the hood. Test fit everything after I made the cut and it's pretty tight fitting so I'm happy with that. There are a few spots we still need to fix on the hood, mainly cracks that we missed before primering and a few small imperfections in the body work... all in all, I'm very pleased with how it turned out and I should be able to spray it red after work tomorrow or the next day and get it on the car finally.

I cleaned up all the scratches and some other minor stuff... I could have spent a lot more time on the hood making it perfect but its close enough for now and looks pretty damn good... Right when I was getting to apply the first coat of red it started to rain so I moved everything into the barn and sprayed it. I'm very happy with how it turned out and I can't wait to get it on the car.

Normally everythings getting done in the carport but I managed to cram this in the old barn due to weather issues. It's not perfect but I don't really care, I mainly just wanted to get paint on the thing so I can get everything done and hopefully have the car in super chevy here in memphis next weekend... we'll see. I should be able to get the hood on later today hopefully.
well, there's a light at the end of the tunnel finally... Hood is on, though it flexed more than I apparently accounted for and caused a small crack on one side... Nothing crazy but I'll clean it all up at some point and weld the top some more, then respray it. I was kind of in a hurry to get paint on it to have a finished running and driving fun car for the warm weather. It still all looks really really good. Close but not finished yet.

Oh yeah, Almost forgot, I'm tossing the chrome locking lugs in the hood, that's why you see the holes behind the wheels and that will hold the back of the hood down, also I still have to put the trim moulding around the cut in the hood to clean it up some and give it more of a finished look.
That last snapshot shows off the car's cheeky grin very well.

New Tires got here today... Still waiting on my new Rotor, I cracked one overtighning it when I swapped wheel studs. No biggie, it shipped today so should be here in a day or 2. The hardtop should be here in a day or 2 also.

I'm thinking really really seriously about that... I'm going to get the brakes sorted out and see what it does and probably order a set after that.
I guess I should update this a little bit... I've gone through a few different engine combos on the little car in the last year. Below is when I had it supercharged with a 142 blower... I loved it but I got sick of no kidding having to fix the front end everytime I got on it and it would raise the front wheels up. Pulled that engine and put an engine I built from an old L-82 corvette. Nothing too crazy... Maybe 375 hp, but more than enough and way more manageable. Had to put it all under a 429 Cobra jet scoop. It fits but not with much clearance. I stayed with the 200-4r trans and daily drive it when it's not raining. I now reside out in the Norfolk/Virginia beach area so stop me if you see me driving by.

Just picked up a new front end for the Sprite. I really didn't want to cut the Thomas denner hood. Picked up a fiberglass frontend from a guy in eBay, drove up and picked it up. Going to figure out how to mount it and also how I'm going to modify it for the engine setup. It's super light compared to my all steel frontend. Should shave a good amount of weight off an already light car.

It's been awhile since I updated but I'm going back to the 142 supercharger setup. It was right. Similar to the pic below but with RHS aluminum heads. Updating everything in the car over the winter, new side pipes, new headers, etc. Should really do a build journal but hell been doing it this way for awhile I guess.

Been kinda dead over here but I'm starting to get some progress done on the little car... Supercharged SBC is in, mated to the 200-4r. Thomas Denner bonnet is modified for the upgraded engine. I still have a lot of work to do but it's moving in the right direction finally!!! I'll post up more pics later today as I think I'm going to pull some parts to sand blast and powdercoat today. Nice weather outside, I'd hate to waste it not getting stuff done😀

The 200-4r is built with a lot of the good internals from the buick grand national crowd... I just got done powder coating the cast deep pan for it, silver vein grey. I like it. The control arms and hardware (just 1 side at the moment)I did in gloss black, and I really liked how they turned out. I did the inner spring in red and the outer spring in single stage chrome powder... I wanted some contrast and I figured, why not. It should look really good when it's all bolted together. I gotta pull the passenger side and do it now, then some other odds and ends on the front and then... bolt it all back together, shiny and clean.

DIY powder coat... unusual.
There used to be problems with the durability of powder coat. The coat stayed together but lost its bond to the metal which then rusted underneath.
TVR had a lot of problems with powder coat shelling off the chassis tubes of their cars.
Maybe things are better now.
I like epoxy two-pack, but I don't like the faff of applying it!

It's pretty reliable these days. I invested in good equipment and good powders and I make sure to clean the metal properly and off gas it at a higher temp than the curing temp for the powder. So far the results have been good and every time I do it it gets better and better and I learn more. Definetly sticking to the epoxy coatings on the frame though, since putting that into the oven and sand blast cabinet isn't practical... or possible. I'll still ensure that the frame is cleaned properly and residue from all oils, etc is gone before painting. Trying to make this the last time I have the car apart.

Sadly, there is little appreciation of how soon metal begins to corrode, especially in a damp atmosphere. One can't see it, but it's beginning. A few hours at most. If the first coat of whatever isn't put on in a few hours, it's going over rust.

This is one reason that 'bare-metal' repaints often fail within a few years.
Too many people think one can strip a piece of metal, leave it a few days, handle it with greasy fingers and not degrease, then they blame the paint when it starts to rust.

I got a lot done today... not as much as I wanted, a few of the parts weren't stripped as well as I wanted do I didn't coat them. Ordered a ton of parts that I needed and went digging through old boxes to find parts that I hope I can use on this one... QA1 double adjustable shocks... yeah, they are for a camaro but I hope to make them work. Also ordered fiberglass supplies for the upcoming front end work, and also bushings that I need to put everything back together. I think I'm going to redo the expansion tank so that I can clean it all up a little nicer. Slowly getting progress in but at least it's progress...

Nothing too terribly crazy going on, besides an insane amount of rain... I moved just about everything out of the way on the driver's side so I can get after it this weekend. The plan is:
1) change how the master cylinder is mounted... it sits a smidge too high and interferes with the hood fitment in that area.
2) install the new gas pedal assembly; this time its going to be floor mounted.
3) clean up the firewall and footwell area so it looks a lot cleaner.
4) start fabrication on the exhaust routing from side pipes to exhaust manifolds.
5) finish fabbing up the steering, from the column down to the rack.
Some parts have already begun to show up but a ton are still on the way. Also thinking about installing a line lock this go around. I have one sitting around from a previous project so why not.

I have two LED headlamp bulbs in my Rambler..
And two enhanced-output Xenon H4.
The low draw and high output makes LEDs attractive in a classic where the generator is small.
These all-LED units used to be eye-watering in price. Hopefully yours were made in the USA...
Will be interesting to see how the output stacks up against a conventional unit.
As to the look... why not. They're, umm, the wrong shade of red, for my car but I reckon they'll look great on yours.
Only thing with these décor units..... when they fail, will it be possible to buy a replacement, or will it have to be two new ones.

I'm positive they were made in China unfortunately. For $120 shipped to my door with all the wiring required, I couldn't really complain. After constantly moving, etc, my old lights were busted and I wanted to try projectors on the little car. I have some in my camaro and I love them. Hopefully I can get some good progress on the car today...
Hopefully your weekend was more productive than mine. Between honey do projects and running out of welding wire, I didn't get nearly as much as I wanted to accomplished, but still, I'm kicking the can in the right direction and progress is progress right?! Got the spot for the master cylinder cut and now I just need to clean up the underside and cut the pipe I snagged from my parents farm and I can weld that on the underside. I also got the final pieces to sleeve the rod for the steering and that will be done as soon as I get my welding wire here. Lastly I added a brace to the frame and I'm going to build a removable support brace for the frame area between the trans and the engine. I got sick of dealing with moisture in my air lines so I got a refrigerated air dryer. Going to build a cart setup for it once my welding wire gets here.

The compressed air dryer was easily one of the better investments I've made so far. Got it hooked up, also replaced the glass viewing window and the work gloves... cleaned out the vacuum filter. If I sifted out the debris from the sand it would be perfect. Either way, it was a night and day difference. After about 30 minutes, a valve cover that was covered in thick oil and paint, etc was almost done. After I was finished with 30 minutes of constant compressor running, and a torrential downpour going on outside, I layer into the desiccant filters to see what they had in them. Not a speck of moisture. Zero humidity in the lines.

It's remarkable how soon air becomes damp. Been using a compressor to change the valve stem seals on my AMC 327, and despite starting with a dry tank it didn't take long for water to appear.
I'm sure that many paint jobs are doomed in that way, microblistering,

Been dealing with a lower abdomen issue so haven't gotten nearly what I wanted to get done finished... pulled the rear-end out, going to rebuild the brakes and look everything over before cleaning it up nicely. The rear shocks were horrible... pushed in and out with no effort. They will get replaced, hopefully with some double adjustable QA1s, if I can figure out what I did with them from another project. Also, car sitting on 4 x 4s on top of wheel dollies so I can roll it around. Don't worry. First thing tomorrow I'm going to build a rotisserie so I can rotate it and treat the underside with the attention it deserves. More to follow, I apologize for the slow progress

Well... pretty long day here but I got a lot done, and despite my best efforts, I didn't injure my self in the process. Got the other part of my Franken rotisserie welded up and started jacking the car way up and supporting it with tires. All went well until I realized that the arms were too narrow on the rotisserie carts and left the car very prone to tipping, which it almost did. Scratch that...
New way I have it set up now is very stable and rolls around easy. Makes the car very easy to work on. I'll get around to modifying the rotisserie stuff later so I can roll it on its side and get the bottom easier on a later date.

Also started cutting rivets and welding the holes up. Want to really clean everything up nice. Got a lot done on cleaning up the new steering setup but I plan on getting a ton more done tomorrow on that front.

So decent day today, got some free time and got a few things roughed in on the car. First thing was narrowing the radiator basket at the bottom so that it fits the radiator tighter. Radiator IA about as tight as it can be to the steering rack after I moved everything around. It all fits though, after a lot of fabrication.

Got serious about traction and not having to constantly fix the front end after it raises off the ground and slams down... got the parts I needed as well for the raise and tilt function on the front end. Going to start hammering that out this week.

I got some work done on the little car... started on the mounts for the raise up then tilt forward feature on the front end. I'm probably making it over complicated but I want it to have plenty of adjustment in it, be sturdy as hell, and not flex.

The all thread will have a plate welded on the bottom and that will go in between the bolt in the heim joint. The square tubing will be slit so that all thread can ride inside it and stop at the top of the tubing. The tubing will be bonded to the front end via other plates on the tube and panel adhesive. Hopefully that all makes sense.
Doc, you would appreciate my "Safety" house shoes... while I was plasma cutting, foot started getting hot. Found out later why when I flipped the shoe over. I guess I stepped on a piece of the hot slag. Didn't go all the way through thankfully.
Maybe this will explain better what I'm thinking as far as the raise and tilt function... it's not finished but getting closer. It has to raise up before tilting because I would have to cut a ton of the bonnet towards the windshield area if it just tilted since the blower setup is so tall. This will help me not have to cut it more hopefully. We'll see I guess. After I get all the front mocked up, before I do the panel adhesive, I'm going to rough out the hinge assembly on the cowl so I can make sure everything is kosher before making it permanent.
